We placed the order for the hardware this morning. We ordered some significantly powerful machines. These systems will be delivered Thursday night in time for our tech team to install them on Friday, the 22nd.
HARDWARE:
Due to the generosity of hundreds of community members, we will be able to bring online sometime over the weekend an AVSIM System that all of us will be proud of, I am sure.
High on our list of attributes that these new systems will provide are:
Virtualization
Clustering
Load Leveling
We will be effectively running the equivalent of 20 servers in two boxes. In addition, we have purchased a 3Com 5500G 1 Gigabit 24 port switch to replace the existing 3C router.
I don’t want to bore you with the details, but here is the inventory of systems that will be brought back online Saturday or Sunday:
• Two HP Proliant DL380 G5’s with quad core Xeon E5450 processors working at 3 GHz.
• 32 GIG of DR2 Ram per G5
• 1.2 terabytes of storage on each G5 using 4 x 300 GB SATA-300/SAS drives.
• In addition, we will be bring back online, or repairing to bring online, our existing three severs, GREEN, PURPLE and WHITE
• We will also bring our NAS back into operation as our primary storage device for the system array.SYSTEM SOFTWARE AND FUNCTIONALITY:
I am going to put my neck on the line here a bit based upon a briefing I received today, and say that our confidence is building about the state of the library. It is my hope that we can have our legacy library back up and running on Sunday. Our email system would also be back in operation.
We will have a Web site back and operating sometime over the weekend. If we can get the old system up and running, great. If not, we’ll create a redirect page for all three domains back to this forum system. In the meantime, the design team continues to work on the web and library redesigns and we will bring them online as soon as the team gives us the go ahead.
As for the Forums system; our confidence is increasing in that there may be something retrievable there. Again, we won’t know until we can inspect the material that we have since recovered and placed on WHITE for storage. More on that later.

Emirates have ordered the model with heavy duty tail scrape pad
I’m going to have to play my one and only card here…
That’s Airbus pilots for ya…. :dev2:
I think Emirates is missing from the title… 😀
Does this mean BA are converting all their orders to the ‘800R’?
There’s no way currently that Virgin would even think twice about buying bmi… A source of mine has said they’re not doing too well (to put it politely). 🙁
Oh I See Them Regulary At Westair As It Is Where I Have My Flying Lessons 😛
Was it really worth bumping a three year old thread to say you do your PPL somewhere?
I’m going to have to follow the craze here…
The Airbus A330 isn’t that bad either…
Well you can’t go wrong with Emirates (and traveling with one airline makes things a lot less complicated – long hauls ‘can’ get boring so to do all that flying you’ll need something as good as Emirates I.C.E to keep you occupied) , but if you’re stopping at VHHH and YSSY, why not try Virgin?
VIR200: LHR-HKG-SYD
&
VIR238: LHR-HKG
I know what you mean about only flying on two a/c type if you fly with EK, but if you haven’t flown long haul before – you’re flying on two of the best aircraft around – so a few legs on each wont do you any harm… 🙂
Great image of a great looking a/c!
I’m aware of the duties of a pilot, however, my question regarding the CAA was more towards the fact that you need 2 pilots for commercial operations. Of course there is some give and take in that some short flights (Islanders etc) can fly with one pilot, but airliners like B737’s have to have a crew of two pilots. Thats why I asked if they would require a third pilot specifically for the wedding.
It’s only like having a long break… Sure it wont be ‘classy’ but if that’s what they want…
Have you never seen a pilot walk down the cabin during the cruise? :diablo:
When LNAV/VNAV are in use (or similar – NAV) it only needs one pilot to monitor the systems and radio. A pilot leaving the flightdeck for 10 minutes isn’t going to make a big difference – if there was a urgent need for the Captain, I don’t think he’d continue to perform the ceremony. 🙂
And what about Jet2….
I’m sure if the couple paid straight away EXS wouldn’t have refunded/paid for the diversion…
There’s always a way to make extra money!
I agree Luke, but a simple call to BA solves the change of card detail problems… 🙂
Yeah, it looks a nice little airport with great photographic opportunities – there’s some great FS scenery for those of you who want to try the interesting approach. The scenery also features the sloped runway! 🙂
– Post 1000, who’d have thought the day would come… Shame 999 are complete b*ll*ks…

Hi,
This has happened to me before with BA, but that was in 2007, it didn’t happen when I flew with them last year (same route).
I think the booking (which the card was required) was paid for by a fellow traveling passenger – but i’ll try and confirm that later today.
I think if someone has booked the flight, but aren’t traveling they need to ring the airline… (Maybe the card details required at check-in are changed to someone traveling.)
