    John,

Sis reckons on bare stone as shes never seen any painted before either on RAF or RAF/USAF bases. However, we stand to be corrected though πŸ˜€ Bex

I would say the same, all the ones I have seen have been bare with no signs of paint on them.

I think due to the size and shape of some airfields a fence would have been difficult to enclose the complete airfield so markers were used. As an illustration a local RNAS was completley fenced/hedged in but the AM owned the land under the approaches outside the airfield so these would have been marked out with markers, also useful owning this land as it made post war expansion of the runways easier, this station had plans drawn up (have a copy) to extend the runways for jets but was never built.

Looks very similar to some “Fence Posts” I pulled out the ground a few years ago from a field very close to Manchester airport, I understand a great number of props became fence posts around Manchester airport after the war, I belive they were from a lanc, unfortunatly being in the ground by the hub the markings have worn away.

Was it common practice to use them as fence/gate posts in the post war period, I also heard of a fence made from Ju52 rudders ? from the aircraft that were scrapped at Burtonwood.

WB440 ex-Failsworth, belongs to Colin Waterworth, was on ebay for 14k about 18 months ago. Has been for sale for about 5 years and went as high as 20k.

Had cosmetic restoration by Fairey Engineering in the late 1980’s and then displayed at the Manchester Air & Science Museum, had a Griffon attached then, have a photo of it some where.

    Scrapped 02/03/1957 at Anthorn

A quick check of the visitor figures puts us up 65% up over this time last year, for the previous couple of years we had been growing at about 20%, so this is good news and hopefully they will grow further.

There are stories of aircraft being dumped in mines up in the North West, there is also stories of a stash of Harleys near Warton.

And don’t forget what was pulled out the ground at Burtonwood, a stash of 0.50 cals for one all neatly chopped with a gas axe, most of this appears to have come from the graving area.

The graving area at Warton is allegedly littered with ammunition just below the surface, who knows what else lies below and over the edge in the marsh.

I can only dream of having facilities like yours, the available money, and the overall drive amongst all!

    Well done..

Mmmmm available money, yes we could do with some of that as this damm place is slowly bankrupting us all. Still no out side funding as yet.

Drive, vision, enthusiasm and ideas are in plentiful supply, its volunteers of any skill level we really need at the moment.

Visitor figures are steadily rising at an acceptable level, vast increase over last year, looks like the advertising budget is is paying off, just need to get the websites all sorted and looking the same.

So I think we are heading in the right direction, must be doing something right as we have now attracted visits from the High Sherriff of Cumbria and the local MP.

Getting that good at begging, borrowing and stealing were are being likened to “The Borrowers”

So many things to do, not enough time or people, but we will get there or die trying.
