Spotted the replica First World War A7V tank in the background – is this normally on display at Millom when it’s not at shows?

It is, then it will spend the summer in the Wigan area going out to shows.

When are these airframes going under cover, especially as some of them are in good condition inside and out?

The Canberra will have to stay out side, the Vampire needs a bit of work and a lot of bodies to get her through the door in the coming months, the others are inside.

It is sad to see the Canberra cut up like that, i doubt she will ever be able to hold her own weight now and will prob need a cradle or somthing under her belly to hold her ๐Ÿ™ …….was she really that close to being scrapped:rolleyes:
With that said well done to all involved ….atleast she did’nt become tin cans

It is quite a problem to resolve putting her back together, the engine/undecarriage sections weigh 2 1/2 tons and when there is only about 4 inches of delaminated spar to try and re-attach the wings, we can remove the engines to lighten them but it is still going to be a very long and difficult task.

If anyone with more intimate knowlege of the Canberra has any suggestions/thoughts we would greatly appreciate their input, or anyone who wants to help out with the restoration work please get in touch.

We will be making a purpose built cradle for her to sit in at the correct position.

Was there a specific reason for the mainplans and tail being chopped at all? – Were the attachment bolts found to be that stubborn that it was decided quicker to cut than to unbolt?

Not nitpicking, just curious (and as a Canberraphile slightly upset to see the old crate so dismembered! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ) It must have been a fairly major operation to cut through that much metal!

Saddly as the mainplane attachment pins had fused and there was a time/financial and access constraint they had to be chopped off, we were not on site so the operation the operation was supervised by BAe Herritage, Ainscough Vanguard did the cutting and are experts in their field, the guy doing it spent a lot of time ensuring the cuts were only the width of the wheel and not made any wider.

Incidently when she was surveyed for us 2 yrs ago by the RAF she was condemed by them due to excesive delamination of the main spar, they advised only to save the cockpit.

Hi – what’s happening with the Canberra move? Cannot contact anyone at the moment as have lost my address book ๐Ÿ™ My job situation has finally been resolved, so trying to get organised & hope to get up to the museum soon. However my new route to work takes me past the Canberra everyday – all looked promising last week – screens went up around it and scaffolding gantries appeared – then they dissapeared again, but from what I can see over the screens, she still seems pretty intact? not even any sign of any panels removed? Whilst I am still pretty busy on the house, I do only live five minutes from the site, so if an extra pair of hands for a couple of hours is of any use? let me know.

Thanks Nick but the dismantling/move is being handled by Ainscough Vanguard

Here are a couple of shots from today, showing the aircraft to start their move after all the spares and machinery have moved to a holding area pending a move further north on Wendesday/Thursday along with the Canberra which will start to move on Wendesday and Thursday.

We have a D4 Link Trainer at Dumfries. How is yours going? We need the loan of the manual if anyone has one, can you help? There are also two broken BT19 Thyratron valves.

Just wondering what pilots you chaps consider as stand out Spitfire pilots of ww2 and also post-war?

There’s thousands of them, but obviously some of them made their marks more than others. Any chance of piling up a list? All down to each persons opinion obviously!
