Another notable blind pilot is Miles Hilton-Barber. His achievements are equally impressive and he will shortly be the subject of an interview in ‘Today’s Pilot’.

I thought everyone was at the Todays Pilot Fly-In at Nottingham Tollerton. It was starting to look more like PFA Cranfield at one point. A superb day (apart from diabolical hay fever)
Dexter Holland – frontman with The Offspring. Owns and flies a 1996 Mooney Ovation and a 2003 Cessna Citation CJ2 !!!
Article to follow in ‘Todays Pilot’.
One of the true gentlemen of the press, it was a great pleasure and privilege to have known him.
My favourite Rudhall anecdote was when he somehow managed to leave the original ‘Battle of Britain’ film script lying around in a school room throughout a busy Duxford airshow weekend – we had to return the next day to liberate it. Miraculously it was exactly where he’d left it.

OFMC Tiger Meet
The event in question is the annual convention for members of OFMC Tiger Squadron, traditionally held the day before Duxford’s October airshow.
The day features flying displays, prize draws, hangar and flightline tours with OFMC’s pilots, speeches, presentations, and the best catering around!

Hi Mark12,
Great picture! I wondered if it would be ok for us to use it in the OFMC Tiger Squadron magazine ‘Tiger Tales’. If so, whom should we credit as photographer? Reply to me off forum if you prefer:

Proms
My first time at an event like this – and definitely not the last. Absolutely stunning. The music brought a whole new dimension to the flying, and vice versa. A deeply emotional experience, and wonderful to see people actually applauding as the aircraft flew past – you don’t see that too often.
The ticket prices might have seemed steep on the day, but if purchased well in advance they were about £16.50 I think – pretty competitive for this type of event.

“Give me a squadron of Spitfires”. (Funny, I always thought that was attributed to Adolf Galland)
I had always assumed the character that said that was actually playing Galland, but apparently not. According to Robert Rudhall’s book on the subject, Galland isn’t portrayed as a character. However, the real Galland was certainly on hand as a technical advisor, so perhaps he recommended the line personally. 😉

Thanks Alexis, and Willow, you’ll be most welcome. Our next Convention will be on Saturday 11 October at Duxford, the day before the Autumn Airshow. Everyone that attends will have their name put in the free draw for a flight in the Mustang, with (normally) at least two runners-up getting a flight in the Harvard. All the pilots are usually available, and I shall treasure the memory of Air Marshal Cliff Spink serving the drinks last year 😀
The Cosford airshow is most definitely cancelled.
Airman on the right is saying:
“Just think old boy, once we get this bird over the pond, we can expect our own squadron of P-38s!”
😀 😀

The additional money raised through merchandise etc is not much (after you’ve paid the accountants and tax man) and is used to support the volunteer activity in terms of tools and equipment. In overall terms it’s a drop in the ocean, but it doesn’t stop us trying.
A similar principle applies with OFMC Tiger Squadron. However, we’ve found it useful to drive profits into a fund associated with the company that is not necessarily connected with keeping the aircraft flying. Over the last few years, our members have raised a significant sum for the Mark Hanna Surgical Research Fund. This charity has proved extremely popular with the members, and is a very worthy ongoing cause. That said, had we donated the same amount of money into the aircraft themselves, we would not have made a significant splash.

HmmmLets see, TFC’s P51, Spitfire V, Beaufighter, Gladiator, Tigercat, Bearcat, Sea Fury etc
All in Red Bull livery???
Now there’s a nightmare.
I think there’s reason to believe that sponsorship can be done with more subtlety. I’ve always felt that Breitling’s sponsorship of OFMC has been handled in the most exemplary manner. The Breitling badges are small and (compared to Red Bull) in keeping with the aircraft. OFMC’s association with Breitling has been wonderfully successful, and has led to airshow appearances all over Europe. I would cite that as an example of how positive sponsorship can be if handled correctly.
And regarding that TFC Gladiator – apparently that’s Stephen’s favourite aircraft (of the current restorations). He says he can’t wait to fly it. 🙂
