Funny, the Assistant Editor of Today’s Pilot is called Steve too.

LOL. I can confirm that Todays Pilot’s Assistant Editor Steve Bridgewater and I are two different people. He has more hair than I do for a start.

However, I do the occasional bit of freelancing for Todays Pilot so am naturally curious to know what people like / dislike about the mag.

    Best regards,
Steve Beebee (my real name, regrettably)

    Indeed, that was the one.

And no, miraculously, I got an A 😉

Ghost Of The Navigator is indeed a metallic sea shanty, but with a little imagination you could be in the cockpit of that haunted Halifax at Cosford 🙂

    Thanks for the update.

The paint scheme currently worn by OFMC’s Harvard is permanent. The aircraft had some additional markings for film work, but these have now been removed. The rest (dark green US colours) will stay.

The song by Filter is called ‘Take My Picture’ and does indeed contain numerous airplane references, specifically “awake on my airplane, awake on my airplane” – always good advice to pilots.

There’s also ‘Aeroplane’ by the Chili Peppers, and numerous Iron Maiden tracks:

    Aces High
    Ghost Of The Navigator
    Flight Of Icarus
    Tailgunner
    Silver Wings (Bruce ****inson solo)
    Back From The Edge (ditto)
Re-Entry (ditto, and most of Bruce’s ‘Skunkworks’ album for that matter)

    Plus there is:
    Bomber – Motorhead

747 (Strangers In The Night) – Saxon

    Forever Free – WASP

Thousand Yard Stare – Big Country

Wings Of Fire – Dare (ouch!)

Ride Into The Sun – Def Leppard

Fly To The Angels – Slaughter

Jet Pilot – System Of A Down

Fly High Michelle – Enuff Z’Nuff

    Jets – Space Age Playboys

    Jet City Woman – Queensryche

Auto Pilot – Queens Of The Stone Age

Murder In The Sky – Gary Moore

Watch Them Fly Sundays – Stereophonics

    Rocket Engines – Warrior Soul

    Ah…..METAAAL !!!!!

EDIT – why on earth has this message board edited the word ****inson!!??? That’s the man’s name for Gawd’s sake 😀

Due to my pesky job, I had to turn down a flight (to Belgium!!) in a Robinson R44 chopper the other day. DOH!

Bearing in mind that the great, late Johnnie Johnson never sustained any injuries in the war (other than one relating to a rugby tackle), I’d be him for a day. Bearing in mind that as Steve Beebee I am a tall, skinny, awkward lummox by comparison, I can only fantasize about what it would be like to be that driven, that self-assured, that brave and have such power to inspire devotion and brotherhood.

And the day I’d pick would be D-Day. At the controls of my Spitfire, leading my Wing over the beaches, I’d get a first class view of this terrible but momentously important day in history. I’d be safe in the knowledge that I personally – being Johnnie Johnson – would come back safely from this mission, and hopefully in time for bacon and eggs and last orders.
