Brazil – commies? What are you smoking, & can I please have some?

Plus there’s that little thing about Brazil helping China with their carrier program exchange for china helping with the brazilian ssn program.

Not unless the F-35B gets cancelled and the Corps decides to replace them early.

And India is probably waiting to see what Brazil orders first. 😀

Not necessarily. Their needs are on the two ends of the spectrum of this competition.

Flip side of that, they are rumored to be helping the chinese with carrier aviation in exchange for help with their SSN program. If that’s true, it wouldn’t do anything positive for our relationship with Brazil.

And who might that be? Do you have any player in mind?

    Perhaps China.

    Or another player.

There isn’t a need for the F136. Not at the cost of airframes to develop it anyway.

    Other than to
    a) Promote innovation in engine technology.
    b) Keep Pratt and Whitney honest on pricing.
    c) Keep some airframes flying in the case of problems with the F-35.

Left alone as a monopoly, Pratt and Whitney has no incentive to deliver a reliable product at reasonable price.

Anyone know if they plan a KC-2? The conversion to a tanker looks more than plausible.

Not that I’m aware of. Its plausible to do so yes, but there are things going against it. First, the Japanese military only uses probe and drogue refueling on helicopters. Everything else is boom. Jets have a hard time flying slow enough to refuel helicopters. Because of Japanese law, they also have absolutely no export aspirations.

Thanks (and thanks 19kilo10), I was naively thinking if you took the harrier, stretched it with a second engine and larger wings, with each engine linked to half the nozzles you could build a STOL fighter with significantly better pay load and bring back and with relatively low risk with regards to development. Still if it was that easy someone would have done it by now.

Would have to be pretty wide. The pegasus is a very large engine.

In case of what? Some kind of freak EMP blast that fries all the world’s electronics?

Does anyone think that it would be possible to build a twin engined STOL aircraft using two Pegasus engines and ducted thrust or would they end up needing a different lift system if they went for a heavier twin engined platform inspired by the harrier?

You could do it podded, but not in a fighter.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Clearly, the F-35B has issues that need to be resolved. Yet, so did the V-22 Osprey and it is in Service Today. As a matter of fact the Osprey crashed several times and many people were killed. Yet, it is flying today……….The F-35B has no issue remotely close to the V-22. Yet, somehow the US Government isn’t going to back an expensive “looser” like the F-35B.

Respectfully, you have no idea of what you speak….:p

If, the Osprey survived the AXE the F-35B has “Good Odds” of making it….;)

The Osprey first flew in 1989. They’re not going to give the f-35B an extra decade to sort things out. They have two years. If they can make it work and RELIABLY it gets funding. If not, the Marines get charlies.

Isnt the main different between the V-22 and the F-35B that the V-22 is a risky concept with easy (relatively) technology whilst the F-35 is a safe concept but technically very challanging include its issues of being overweight.

Actually, the F-35 is even more risky and complex than the osprey. With the Harrier, they built the aircraft around the Pegasus engine which was designed specifically for STOVL. With the F-35, they had to use a conventional fifth generation design and adapt both the airframe and a conventional turbofan engine for STOVL operation. Its been tried many times before and hasn’t exactly worked. In fact, the only STOVL design (and there have been tons of them since the 60s) to have satisfactory service is still the purpose designed harrier.

    OV-10 Bronco on US LHA…

Notice their aren’t any pictures of it landing. Don’t be surprised if Bell and Agusta start working on militarized concepts based on the BA609.

Thanks Maus92, I wonder if given the alternatives, if the USMC would still accept into service the F-35B even if it ends up a lot heavier and its payload, range and bring back suffers as a consequence.

If that happens, the decision is being made for them and they’re getting charlies. At this point, someone at lockheed is going to have to come up with a miracle.

    Ben,

Its only integrated if its there when its called on.

Except for the Marines taking over the 400 slot in every carier wing.

Cart before the horse there Ben. Its not the USMC’s job to provide airframes for USN CAW’s.

    A) Look up tac-air integration.
    B) No it isn’t, that job falls to the Department of the Navy who has the right prioritize which of its assets receive funding. Take a gander which is higher on its priorities list? Carriers with 4 squadrons or STOVL Marine CAS?
