Personally, I wonder how Russia’s invasion of Georgia will impact the already strained relationship with India??? Especially, considering India has moved much closer to the West in recents years.
Looks like one more nail in the coffin for Russia in the MMRCA Contest!
Interesting topic Scooter! Its more about geopolitics than military related – dont you think? But why India? why not.. say Iran or some other country in the middle east? What makes you think India will re-think its ties with Russia based on whats happening in Georgia? What would happen if we apply the same logic with respect to the US? I’m finding it hard to understand the co-relationship between the two here…

p.s. useless thread though !
Sigh! if you dont have anything to add – skip the thread
I am not sure..I think I read somewhere that 2032 is going into it.
Hi Ray,
This was acc to AI 2007. MMR is slated to be in LSP 3. Rakall had a pretty good summary of AI 07 especially for Tejas… unfortunately his post in BR is not archived (i think)..
Rak man….can u please re-cap ur AI 07 notes here…especially the Tejas one. TIA 🙂
Any latest news about the MMR?I read somwhere that 2032 is going into the LSPs..?
Wasnt MMR scheduled to be integrated onto LSP 3? (the one close to the IOC std). Only 2-3 sets of 2032 have been purchased.
The Mirage-2000H (Hindustan) /TH Trainer Hindustan) IS India specific. The radio altimeter and some other avionics on board the 10 attrition replacement M2ks were not similar to the 42 M2K-H/THs that the IAF had bought in the 80’s. and that meant that the IAF waited till Dassault replaced them with the same standard as the first M2K-H batch.
Didnt know that. Thanks for the heads up Ankush.
So, France is going to sell India the AdlAs first squadron of Rafales, which have only just entered service? The entire French air force stock of Rafales? What’s this bloke smoking? I want some!
And then, France is going to sell India Mirage 2000H which France doesn’t have, since the Mirage 2000H was a model specific to India, which France has never operated. Yep, this blokes connection with reality is pretty tenuous. His grasp of logic is equally frail. Why would a Mirage 2000 have to go through a lengthy decommissioning, but not a Rafale?
French have 20+(?) Rafales under Operarional CUs for training purposes. May be these are the ones that might be offered. I’ve never heard Mirage 2000H being “India Specific” per se. Kovy/Opit can help us here.
The reporting is no big deal as far as Indian media standards are concerned. They make an Su 30MKI into Su 31 overnight by quoting “reliable sources”
Modernisation plans of IAF on course, says Air chief
Special Correspondent
S.P. Tyagi dismisses concerns at combat worthiness of IAF fleet
*Hawks, AWACS to be inducted next year
*HAL to supply 20 Jaguar bombers
*Extensive upgrade programme under wayNEW DELHI: The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal S. P. Tyagi, on Thursday dismissed concerns about the combat worthiness of IAF fleet. He denied that this week’s high-level meeting took place because of concerns he expressed at the dwindling fleet strength in a letter to Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee.
Speaking at a customary news conference here, before the Air Force Day on October 8, Air Chief Marshal Tyagi also denied there was political insensitivity to the IAF’s plea for speeding up import of 126 multirole combat aircraft (MRCA).
“It would be very wrong to suggest that the Government is not concerned. In fact, the system is actually looking at our request.”
Pressed for a time frame by when the import deal would be signed, he said: “For two years I have being saying soon. Suffice [it] to say I will stop saying soon.”
Air Chief Marshal Tyagi said the request for proposals (RFP), which initiates the tendering process, was a complex document. It was revised twice due to changes in purchase procedures with the introduction of new concepts such as life cycle costs and offsets (defraying 30 per cent of the import value through industrial activity within the country).
On the modernisation and induction programme, he said any number of air assets were not enough to develop a strategic reach. “Even the U.S. Air Force claims it does not have enough aircraft.” But for the time being taken to purchase MRCA, acquisition and modernisation plans were largely on course.
The advanced jet trainer Hawk would fly in India by September 2007. Next year would also see induction of three AWACS (planes equipped with sophisticated radars to detect air activity in a 300-km radius of their flight path) as well as import of 80 new helicopters. Manufacturers agreed to accelerate the production of Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter planes and provide the IAF with more advanced light helicopters, Dhruv. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, maker of Dhruv, would also supply 20 Jaguar bombers, besides continuing to work on the light combat aircraft, Tejas.
The IAF embarked on an extensive upgrade programme comprising almost the entire transport and fighter fleet. Upgrades were being carried out on MiG-27 and Jaguars, besides MiG-21 BiS, and were planned for MiG-29 and Mirage-2000 (fighters), An-32 and IL-76 (transport planes) and Mi-17 (helicopters).
The IAF was looking for six refuellers to double the fleet strength. It was developing the capability to utilise assets in space to shorten the “sensor to killer loop.”
The military component of the proposed aerospace command would be tri-services command though the IAF would have primacy, as was the case with similar commands in other countries. “Civil agencies are also involved in space. That has to be considered. We are working on the nuts and bolts. The question is how and when.”
Cannot ignore Pakistan’s plan
On Pakistan’s plan to acquire new assets including F-16 fighter planes, he said: “As air chief, I should not give the impression of being worried. But are you going to ignore it? The answer is no.”
As the balance of power changed in the subcontinent, the military’s job was to incorporate the development in its training, defensive posture and doctrine. “So we keep a close watch all round the world. But I would hesitate to use the word `worried’.”
Admitting that there was a near miss between a passenger plane and a fighter during the IAF exercise “Gagan Shakti,” last month, Air Chief Marshal Tyagi said that with the growth in civilian traffic, both sides must make adjustments and step up coordination.
New Delhi May Buy Qatari Mirage Aircraft – From Paris
If Indo-French negotiations pan out, France would buy 12 used Mirage 2000-5 jets from Qatar and resell them to India along with eight French Air Force Mirage 2000-Hs.
The broad contours of such a deal were worked out in Paris during a Sept. 3-5 visit by Indian Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee. Final details are expected to be settled when French MoD officials visit New Delhi in late September, a senior Indian Defence Ministry official said.
A French diplomat here confirmed the proposed deal. Neither official provided more details.
Its about bloody time they made some quick decisions. Any new updates on the news that 20 new M2K-5s would be purchased from France. or were they referring to these 20?
With PV3 flying in abt 10 days or so, how different is it from PV2? There were reports that MMR was facing some issues and that 2 modes have been succesfully tested so far. Which is the 3rd one that’s giving the problem? A2G? Could not find any reports on MMR progress of late. Any new developments on that front? Would the PV3 have the MMR integrated? How far of the envelope has been explored till now? Would PV3 flying with diff AAMs on it?
PS. Its been a long time we’ve seen any new pics of LCA.. 🙁 any new pics?
😎 Wow..Superb Pics. Thanks a ton Kovy..

Su-30 MKI programme on schedule: HAL
Bangalore, Sept. 3 (PTI): The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited today said it had not scrapped the initial plans for full indigenisation of Sukhoi fighter aircraft at its facilities in India and said the production of the warplane continued in HAL. The Bangalore-headquartered HAL dismissed reports over Sukhoi (Su-30 MKI) in a section of the press, quoting a Russian newspaper, as “completely incorrect”.
A HAL statement said “Total technology is getting established in HAL as planned. In order to complete the programme by 2015 instead of 2018, as required by the Indian Air Force, certain components and systems are being procured from Russia. This decision was taken to optimise the investments in HAL”. It added: “The programme of indigenous production of Su-30 MKI aircraft in HAL is continuing at an accelerated pace as compared to earlier plan”.
Media reports from Russia last week suggested that in a move to save costs and speed up delivery of Sukhoi fighter aircraft, HAL has scrapped initial plans for full indigenisation of the warplane at its facilities in India. Russia’s `Kommersat’ daily reportedly said an agreement signed recently between Russian arms firm Rosoboronexport and Indian Defence Ministry has changed the timeframe of the completion of USD 3.5 billion contract for the licensed production of 140 Su-MKI by HAL.
Talks about future AESA, Engines et al..but I found this interesting. Any new updates on N-LCA??
Models of enlarged and carrierborne fighter concepts of the Gripen are expected to be unveiled at the Farnborough air show in mid-July, says Gripen International.
The latter is understood to have emerged as a potential candidate to meet Indian navy maritime strike requirements, but could also be offered to countries like the UK if the Lockheed Martin Joint Strike Fighter project encounters future difficulties
Thanks a lot George J and Nick.
yes a lot of LCA spinoffs are aleardy in the MKI, and more to come in future blocks. technically the LCA is actually more advance than the MKI in terms of materials, systems, and some avionics.
The MKI has the range, thrust vectoring of cource and big ass radar which puts it in a different catagory – but the MKI III onwards are introducing more LCA tech
Hi FD, if you dont mind, could you please be more specific as to what type of LCA spin-offs are existent on MKI. googled a lot, but found nothing :(.
