Technically these are known as Clevis pins and used in many mechanisms as well as for flying wire fittings. Google gives many sites listing them.

I know Fred Olson C-46’s operated into LAP at night. I never saw one, though I have a photo that was given to me of one. If it surfaces, I’ll post it.

Hardly rubbish! I remember how gutted I was when I heard the Bulldog had crashed.
    Jim

Seeing the Bulldog crash was a sobering experience for a lad. When I heard the engine running roughly, I knew the pilot was in trouble. The sensible (?) thing would have been to put it down straight ahead, but that area was covered in people making their way into the show, so to avoid many casualties, he tried to turn back to the runway, with the inevitable result. As can be seen from the photo, damage was severe and to this day I don’t know if the pilot survived.
Many years later, I wrote a piece for one of the magazines of the day about the aircraft and parts that Shuttleworth had stored in a barn away from the airfield. Apart from Shuttlworth employees, very few people knew about this store. While taking photos there for my article, I was amazed to find the rudder with K2227 on it. It was none other that that off the Bulldog.
Skysport, just down the road at Hatch eventually created the Bulldog on show at the RAF Museum, incorporating the rudder and no doubt other parts that had found their way into the barn.
Before anyone gets excited and trys the find the barn. It no longer exists, being part of the gravel pits that now cover the site. All the contents are either at the airfield, or have found new homes.
