I flew in a Blue Island Trislander a few years back, from Brighton City Airport (Shoreham) to Alderney. That was an interesting flight. The Trislander was full, as was the hold, and must have been pretty much on its maximum take-off weight. We took off on the northerly runway at Shoreham, but due to the load, we had to follow the course of the River Adur for a few miles, before it gained enough height to climb over the hills and head south for Alderney. Most flights into Alderney seemed to be Trislanders and Islanders of Aurigny and Blue Islands.

I ran out of those nice auto feed plastic re-inforcing rings and as I was trying to do some filing, I had a rummage in the drawers of an old desk I had been given, to see if there were any in there. No, but I did find some Butterfly Brand “Ring Reinforcements – strong cloth, well gummed, for loose leaf books” Made in Great Britain too, so must be at least 50 years old. Were we great in 1961? Anyway, I did use them for a few days until I got bored with trying to pick them up individually, see which side was gummed, then licking each one. They still stuck on OK, but I won’t be using the rest of the 100 in the box. Any classic stationary collectors want to make an offer for them?

And to think I thought £3-0-10d that Westlands paid me as an apprentice was bad…lol.

I’m just old enough to remember seeing somebody use pre-decimal coins (an old man in Sainsbury’s putting some old pennies on the conveyor and the check-out girl asking ‘are we still taking these?’) but when I checked-back I still don’t remember the correct order of some other coinage changes.

Decimal coins apparently reached the high-street in 1968 but Britain didn’t go decimal until 1971 so how did that work; were the five new-pence piece and the ten new-pence piece used as a ‘bob’ and a ‘florin’ respectively (since they were the same size)?

The fifty-pence piece was introduced in 1969 so how did that work pre-decimal; ten ‘bob’?

I don’t remember the sixpence being taken out of circulation (amazingly late in 1980) and I could have sworn that the twenty-pence piece arrived (in 1982) after the new halfpenny piece went out of circulation (actually 1984).

I can remember ‘threepenny bits’ with great fondness (the coins ) but can’t remember if I ever spent any or was just given some after they went out of circulation.

I can also remember becoming aware of the horrors of inflation when POLO mints went up from two to three pence; my pocket-money had once bought five tubes but now I could only afford three!

Threepenny Bits, were also rhyming slang for ladies chest parts too…

Are you doing a total nut and bolt ground up restoration job?.

    Lincoln .7

Naah, not enough years left in the old body now, though I have replaced most of the rusty self tappers with stainless steel ones, new grille, replacement doors and a bit of sill welding last year. Just had to pay out for drive shaft gaiters and rear brake cylinders to get through the MOT this week.

The hat or the princess? (Is that classified as treason, if so, it wasn’t me, someone must have hacked into my account…)

Banupa: Pup G-AWEC. In 1971 it flew UK-HKG! Now a GIA.

Glad it’s still in use, albeit not in the air. You never know, 20 years on, perhaps someone will get it back where it belongs.

Climbing towering elm trees! We had 3 favourites, The Gas Works, from the top of which you could see Southall gas works, The Windsor from where Windsor Castle was viewable (in theory anyway) and The 3 Sisters. This one had grown with 3 separate trunks. Can’t recall anyone actually managing to get up any of the 3!
