Yes, I remember those, If memory serves me right, they were the first I smoked, because they had “Cards” to collect in them.
I still love to hear a Radial or Merlin strike up though, God thankfully didn’t keep all the goodies for himself.;)

    Lincoln .7

I must be far younger than you Lincoln…lol. My grandfather smoked them, I suspect so I could have the cards, which had to be cut out of the packet with a pair of scissors. I think they were printed in a dark blue ink? I can remember collecting locomotives of the “Southern Region”, though not aircraft… My grandfather worked for Fairey Aviation at Hayes fro 1924 until the ’60’s when ill health (probably caused by the Turf intake) made him leave the company. After his death, I inherited his 25 years service Asprey gold watch. which I have now passed onto a younger cousin.

    Good evening,

Here is another slide scan. This time it is LN-FOR, a Curtiss C-46R of Fred Olsen. It was seen at Rotterdam on May 3rd, 1970.

    Kind regards,

    Peter

Fred Olson C-46’s used to visit Heathrow on night freight flights, but were gone before it got light, so very few were caught on film. (When I was a lad…)

Soon after getting my PPL, I took my family to Sandown in our club’s rather tatty Auster. At that time I hadn’t learnt to swim, (I was only about 40 at the time) so decided that just in case the Gipsy went quiet over the Solent, I would be at such a height to get back to the mainland, or drift down onto the island. I can’t remember exactly, but I think I was at 4000 feet over the wet stuff. All very well, but an awful lot of height to loose to get into Sandown!
In later years I took my short span Auster Aiglet Trainer there for Auster Club Fly-ins. It was a tad warm though and on departing, I noticed my rate of climb barely exceeded that of the Vectis bus climbing the hill beside me…

    Schoolboys’ tales

I hate to say it Rochford, but I think you must have my hoarding instinct too! I’ve still got most of my Civil Aircraft Markings going back to 1961 if not before. (Thinks, must list them on E-Bay).

    Prentices spotted.

Sorry, no pics, but my cousin and I visited Southend in 1959, I think, and made an attempt to reach the hoard of Prentices to record what was there, only to be apprehended by a chap from Aviation Traders, who had been summond by the tower. We thought we would not be noticed… Ah the innocence of 13 year olds! It did make life easier though, as the chap took us into the hangar and presented us with several sheets of paper, stapled at the corner, listing all of the Prentices they had, and which were at Southend and those at Stansted. We did a trip to Stansted too, but abandoned the thought of getting out to them when we realised the runway could impede our progress! Still, we thought it reasonable to underline the lot in our 1959 Civil Aircraft Markings…
At the time ATEL were marketing a 7 seater for joyriding, but I don’t think they converted more than the prototype to that configuration.
As far as getting them to Southend and Stansted, registrations were roughly daubed on with a paint brush. Aircraft that had U/S engines were fitted for the one flight with “slave” engines, swapped from one aircraft to another.
I often wondered if they made any profit from the venture.

    Books & Mags

Don’t think I have any Miles ones, though, I did live in Woodley at one time! If only I could find time to retire, I could get around to E-Baying them! The mags are still here and up for grabs though!

    Where is she now?

Thanks FC. That sounds like her resting place for now then. It would be a shame if she didn’t get back in the air. Out of the Austers I flew, G-ANWX was by far the nicest to fly, though the landing was an aquired technique. With its short span wings and coarse pitch prop, take-offs could be a bit nail biting…
