Just one stripe. F-AZJS at Lausanne 2011
Yes, I do remember that observation. Pity we cannot refer back to the thread!
But Tony, it was not “near the body” for regrettably we are no closer to finding that. I still have no news about the search for Dennis Copping’s remains.
Slicer:
Although not my first Spitfire (see post 44, above) I recall seeing Jeffrey Quill and AB910 QJ-J at the Alconbury Armed Forces Day in May 1959.
My first (that I remember at least) was Mk XIV 6640M (RM694) at Hornchurch when I went for an RAF Selection Board, 19/1/1958. This XIV was not in a Canadian pine crate though. Next was September 1958 at Hawkinge (there for gliding) Mk IX M5690 (MK356), but the most exciting were a bunch I saw in Belgium a year later (9/1959): XIV SG-31 (RN201) at Beauvechain, and IXs OO-ARA to ARF at Middelkerke.
Re Lincoln7’s story of tanks being used as Fenland road foundations, I have no proof one way or the other, but I do remember my father telling me that old army tanks were used for flood defences after the war. We lived in Peterborough at the time. So there is at least some local hearsay evidence!
And this one at La Blécherette at Lausanne:

Yes Martin. I think it must have been military. The first suggestion by my correspondent was maybe Wellington. I have been in touch with him again and he says he remembers it as a “rust” coloured frame, some 4m long. I wonder if “rust” coloured indicates desert camouflage.
It seems it was not the DC3 that Eric mentioned. Any other ideas?
Thanks Eric. It is possible.
This flight would have been from the “old” Sharjah airport. The report you mention says it was “near” Sharjah. The crash site as far as I am able to determine was some 50km, at least, north east of Sharjah. To get to Bahrain the course would have been to the west, but maybe the crew was completely lost. The report is frightening to read. Reminds me of a more recent accident due to co-pilot “error”.
Correct Martin. I got the title wrong I see.
Mods: can you change the title to “Trying to identify a crash in UAE 1956”?
Lee: I sent you an email in case you are interested in photos I have of the “fake” G-ANFE at Sharjah (in fact cn 14072). Did you get it I wonder?
I regret that I have no news about this serious matter since my last post.
Rubanox Radiagal looks like some sort of cooler for domestic refrigerators.
A Pièce de Résistence brakedwell! Happy Christmas.
