Amazing piece of history – and of story-telling. Many thanks. Great to see such a good piece on this forum that has suffered so much in the past months.

runaway: I don’t think that the word “Beaufighter” means anything apart from its reference to the aircraft. As stated above by Ant.H, it was developed from the Beaufort (eg Sir Francis Beaufort, inventor of the Beaufort scale of wind speeds). When it was developed as a fighter I assume that Bristol simply invented the new word “Beaufighter”.

That’s better! Many thanks. I was often in Peterborough around that time, so not far away.

Thanks for the newspaper cuttings Mothminor. I liked the “caught in a down-draught” and, “It won’t take much repairing”.
I had not realised before seeing the film clips that the undercarriage was totally ripped off! Quite a down-draught!

Halcyondays: I don’t see any pictures. This new thread format is not easy to manage.

Thanks Mothminor. I’ve not seen those clips before. Last time I was at Al Mahatta the nose was still a major attraction. I note that in the comment under the youtube post it states that the nose is at Sharjah International Airport. The Al Mahatta Museum is in fact on the site of the old RAF Sharjah, now in the middle of town. https://sites.google.com/site/lgarey/rafsharjah%2Calmahattamuseum

AA: So just as well you don’t have a mischievous side …
Some might even say put it outside with Hendon’s collection IN it. Sorry I said that. I didn’t mean it.

It would be sad if we lost the last Beverley, although I believe it is not in good condition. It remains a favourite of mine:

avion: I’m not sure about 1975 as I have no record then. There was a thread on this very same Key Forum started by Jetflap 28.12.2009. I’ll try a link to it:

I wonder if it will work.
This was the collection sited both in the terminal and on the terrace outside. I see I ventured some identities at that time.
On 6.5.1979 in the terminal I noted, apart from the Nord 1002: Hütter 17a, Ju52/3m D-CIAS, Me163 “54”, Me262, Rhönbaby.
Laurence
I saw the Nord 1002 on display in Frankfurt terminal in May 1979. I did not see any identity on it. There were 6 aircraft in all.

Thanks for that Becks. As you can see from my photos of Jim as a boy (in the Peterborough ATC) at the start of this thread I have known him for a long time. I was sad to hear of him flying off to a land where Lincolns also still fly. I’m sorry that I can’t get to the funeral as I am a long way away, but I shall be thinking of you.
Laurence
Second attempt to reply. The first disappeared.
Thanks for those splendid pictures Blue. Quite an achievement. I never liked that Australian nose though! (Although one might see a resemblance to an NF14)

bazv: You mention Pprune. I have for long been visiting their Aviation History and Nostalgia forum (and indeed other forums on that site for my other interests). Not a patch on Key (as it was then) but it could be made better if a bunch of enthusiasts used it more often. I know that Pprune is the so-called Professional Pilots’ Rumour Network but others than they can contribute, and there are interesting tidbits of history to be had. Any others have opinions?
Laurence
Quite right bazv, we never did. Pity we have to wait for sad news to realise!
Laurence
Quite right BobKat. Together with one or two others that have already gone across (and that I and many others are now following in their new home), yours is one of those marathon contributions that made the Key thread what it WAS (and is no more). It’s sad that the Key people do not seem to realise that. I know that not every one wants to know about real, well researched historical data, but some of us DO. And many of us have left. I decided to stick it out as there is still life in the old thread, although it needs support. For how long will that support last? We are getting fewer by the day.
