    Eastern

Not sure they’d go there as Eastern have it covered. Saying that Easterns fares are ridiculous, so there is probably a fair market for cheap fares. Easterns new look looks great in my opinion, but I am a little worried. CWL-BRU shows up on the booking tool, but not down the side, and when you try to book there aren’t any flights on any days. Anyone know whats going on?

Does anyone know of WOWs plans for the next year? Any new aircraft, or are they just coasting for a while in order to expand in one big push.

Great news for BHX, and the new destinations certainly sound like baby is becoming more adventurous. I just hope CWL gets the last 737. It’s about time bmibaby got some new, or at least new second hand 737s. I don’t see why there is such a lack of investment in baby, when everyone knows that baby is the only thing keeping the bmi group afloat. Surely in buying another 5 or 6 aircraft for the winter baby could greatly increase pax numbers and revenues, which would be good for the bmi group as a whole. Lack of aircraft is the only reason IMO why baby has lagged so far behind FR and EZY in expansion.

EMA and CWL do not seem to be priorities for Baby in terms of new routres.

bmibaby based a third aircraft at CWL for the first time for summer 06, and said that they were seriously considering adding a fourth. That third aircraft remains, and bmibaby have experienced their busiest summer yet this year, and I believe are on course to fly 750,000 passengers this year from CWL. Their aim is to fly in excess of 1m passengers a year. It’s true that Air Wales’ collapse did hit them, as they were unprepared and therefore unable to provide cover for the Paris, Cork, Belfast and Jersey services. As a result, CDG was scrapped, ORK given to RE and frequencies greatly reduced to BFS & JER. But with four extra a/c, and CWL proving a “solid growth” base with many untapped routes, and the Route Development Fund that was not available this time last year, I’m confident that CWL will get at least one, maybe 2 of these aircraft, and maybe 2 or 3 new routes. Increasing the frequencies of some exisiting, under served routes must also be a priority. From where I’m standing CWL is definatly a priority. Aside from CWL, I agree that BHX will be the main recipient of the new aircraft and routes, and that MAN & EMA will see little if no expanison. It seems stupid to expand at EMA if your going to concentrate future growth at BHX, and theres just too much competion at MAN.

Will Cardiff miss Ryanair? Depends on how well Aer Arann do in their place.

Not really. Loads were always good, but the timings were all over the place, and most people preferred the Air Wales service, its just there wasn’t enough capacity so FR was the only other option. I think RE could actually slot a 3rd daily flight in if they wanted to.

It’s a bit of a blow that 4 years ago MOL said he hoped FR to establish a base at CWL in the future, but that plan now seems dead and buried. However, there was no guarantee that that would happen, and as a result of Air Wales & Ryanair leaving, we now have 3 new airlines, more destinations and higher frequencies, so altogether I think its been a pretty good start to 2006 🙂

Yeh probably becuase since then they’ve announce CWL-DUB & from tomorrow Galway, and have restarted the DUB-NOC route. About time they got some extra aircraft I think.

When Thomsonfly announced the expansion plans for this summer a while ago, the CWL website quoted that a 737-800 would be based at the airport in addition to the 757 and intermittently a 767.

Er, bit confused people, as Easterns flights from CWL were supposed to take off yesterday, but BRU & ABZ still are not bookable, and theres limited choice on NCL too! Whats going on? The J41 has been parked up here for a while now.

think it will most likely be operated by the 737-300 that is being based there this summer.

    It’s a 737-800 being based here, not a 300 🙂

If bmibaby had found it worthwhile operating a 737 to Paris then they would have continued to so. They didn’t so AWW operated the route and WW found a better use for the 737.
    QUOTE]

Trust me there was enough capacity for the 737. This was at a time when babys plan was to open up as many bases as possible, even though they didn’t have enough aircraft to do it. At CWL they had the perfect partner in Air Wales to operate their routes so they could use the 737s to achieve their goal of more bases. They didn’t have this perfect willing partner at EMA, so CWL was the base that suffered. And if it was as unsuccessful as you say it is, why are they bringing back a double rotatuion using a 737. They wouldn’t unless they think it’ll work ,which quite clearly they do.

Great about Nice, shame they didn’t have it flying for this summer, and I’m guessing the French route will be Toulouse. I flew on this flight regularly and it was always full, I mean 100%. Ditching it the first time was perhaps the stupidest decision ever made by bmibaby. Yet again this was to increase capacity at MAN.

The route could sustain a 737 and did for while before baby decided that they’d contract it to Air Wales to operate with ATRs with increased frequency, so they could use the spare 737 to help start up the MAN base.

Er I thought some rich private investor owns just over 50% of bmi, so either Lufthansa or SAS owns less than you’ve just quoted.

Its been doomed for ages. CWL didn’t even bother to announce the launch of AlphaOnes services on the website, and later the operations manager said he’s never actually spoken the Martin Halsted about the service. Some dreams are just too big to take off at such a young age.
