I’m pretty sure the unfortunate fellow is a Fairey Battle bomb aimer.
You sir, have a keen eye!
It took me a while, but I found a picture of the underside of a Battle. Sure enough, there’s a sliding section of roughly teardrop shape that I’m certain is what I’m looking at.
Thanks!

Through some contacts at the RAF Museum and a couple of private collections, I was able to get scans from the chapters of AP1730 covering the Course Setting Bomb Sight. This proved very useful! Unfortunately they do not cover the Mk. X, because it was already removed from use when this was published. The Museum did donate a rather good image of the Mk. X, however, and I’ve put the article up. Just google up “Course Setting Bomb Sight”, the Wiki article should be in the first 5 links somewhere.
I’ve moved on to the Mk. XIV now. This takes up almost 100 pages of the AP1730, so I suspect the entire book must be enormous!
If you do ever make it to Wellington and scan this, my hat is off to you in advance, sir!

You wouldn’t happen to have a copy of Air Publication AP1730A would you? This covers quite a few of these designs and I’d love to read it.
Best solution in my mind is a way to preserve the museum in the building with the building designated historically and protected.
This seems unlikely, given the fate of the “Arrow hangers” at Pearson.
The landlord is a federally contracted group hired to run what is a National Park. As far as I am aware, no other group is under any threat to leave for what someone has darkly suggested is for a sports stadium..
It is definitely planned to use this spot for a large building with multiple hockey rinks.
Honestly, the Lanc is the least of the issues IMHO. The museum also has the first manned ornithopter, which, historically speaking, is much more important. The Arrow may be a model, but it seems it would be well at home in Ottawa.
