    RE: INDONESIAN MARINES-IMAGES.

Tomel, love the pic’s. The region surrounding Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore etc. has always been of interest to me.
Two questions though, I hope you can answer them:

    1) Since when has Indonesia operated the BMP-2?
    2) What type of cehicle is the first pic…with the painting of the island on its hull? It looks like a French type, but I can’t place it.

    RE: Malaysian Army mixed images.

Ireland IS seperate from NATO, however Ireland is a member nation of both the UN and PfP with intentions to join NATO in the next few years. This is being met with serious opposition from various politicans within the government, mainly due to the fact that if we do join NATO the Irish Defence Spenditiure will have to be increased.
Britain does not ignore us at all in any way. The Royal Navy aids us with Coastal Defence and Fisheries Protection as well as SAR. In ’96, I believe it was the Royal Navy was requested to support Irish Navy actions against Japanese Fishermen fishing illegally in EU waters.
The British also train our Special Forces (we have a Pathfinder Squadron and an SAS style force known as Rangers – I am proud to say that I have two cousins who serve as Rangers)!
The AUG was chosen on economic grounds – it was offered cheaper than the SA80A1 and M16A2 and offered the same capabilities.
Britain does keep various Irish Regiments in its ranks such as the Irish Guards which I trained for and the Royal Irish Rangers (not to be confused with the Rangers I mentioned before)as well as the British run RUC or Royal Ulster Constabulary.
To say that Britain has nothing to do with Irelands defence is basically c*** from someone who does not understand the situation fully. The RAF provides Air Defence to the Republic due to the fact that Ireland has no fighters and relies on 65mm BOFORS AAA for air defence.
Irish troops often transfer to the British Army due to the fact that Irelands policies are based on NON-Interference unless requested by the UN…and the Irish Defence Force is quite often requested. Britains Armed Forces also offer more intense training and better prospects.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-07-02 AT 11:33 AM (GMT)]Yeap, thats the L.E. Roisin…sister ship of the L.E. Niamh. Here is what I could find out on the web about them:

    Built by: Appledore Shipbuilders Ltd.
    Outfitted by: MES
    Crew: 44
    Water Displacement: 1,500 ton
    Length: 78.84m
    Width: 14.00m
    Speed: 22kts
    Weaponry:
    2 x 57mm “Wallop” Mortars
    1 x 62mm OTO Melara cannon
    2 x 12.7mm MSHB machine guns

Radars are NATO standard air search/sea search
    No decoys
    No chopper – offically

These ships are really being treated with some degree of secrecy for some reason, given that they are classified as just “off shore patrol vessels”, and given that the main task of the Irish Naval Reserve is to stop illegal fishing in EU waters and halt drug smugglers in Irish waters. Here’s a better view of her, quite nice really.

    RE: Infantry Combat Vehicles

All Infantry Combat Vehicles are excellent vehicles, but it all depends on what they are intended for. For example the South African Ratel is an excellent vehicle for action out in the Bush whilst facing under armed rebels or poorly armed forces. On the other hand the BMP-3 is an outstanding vehicle when it comes down to survival on the modern battle field. Each is developed for each nations requirements. (I know you all know this but I do have a point, believe it or not). This is the point. An armoured vehicle such as a BMP-2 or -3 should not be deemed better or worse than a vehicle such as a Bradley or Ratel due to the fact that they were each drawn up to fill a variety of requirements to each nation. Does anyone agree or disagree with this???

Some pic’s, including the awesome BTR-90!!! What a nice machine this is gonna be. Does anyone know if the ’90 is in service yet or not???
