[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-04-02 AT 02:58 PM (GMT)]Check out the following sights for info’ on Russian Thermal Imaging Systems:

    http://milparade.com/1996/18/42-45.htm

    http://army-technology.com/projects/t-80

for the latter site visit the industrial projects screen and click on main battle tanks, you will then be given a list of vehicles including the T-80U. Russian TI as I said before is limited purely for economic reasons, since the US success against Iraqi tanks in “Desert Storm” however Moscow has placed greater emphesis on TI technology. I am not saying they lagg behind in tech’ compared to the US in TI tech’, but their tank designs are equal to anyone else.

The “Shtora” kinda puts them up there with the best as far as defence is concerned and as far as TI, T-80Us are being equipped (albeit in small numbers) with advanced TI equipment. The reason for the delay in development is purely cost.

    RE: Armour

Ink, who said the Russians were behind the West in tank design? You don’t still believe all the Cold War rubbish about Eastern tech’ which the US produced do you? In the past, Russia only exported its “Monkey models” to client states (tanks which were equipped with sub-standard systems compared to Russian service types, a bit like the F-15S being a down graded F-15E). For many years now, Russia has lead the way in many respects with tank and ICV design. Look at the BMP-1, nothing in the West was close to this design for many years. Now the BMP-3 is considered the best ICV in service. The T-72 is in widespread service and has many nations offering upgrades such as the “Moderna” from Slovakia. The T-80U is one of the best protected tanks in the world and can be fitted with Shtora EOD systems, Arena self defence systems, Kontact-5 ERA and can fire the “Reflex” anti-tank missile as standard. Also the T-80U has a more powerful turret than the MIA1. The Russian MSTA self-propelled gun is considered the best weapon of its type and the BTR-80 leads the way for APC vehicles. If anything Russia leads the world in armour technology!

I used to work for Land Rover building the Free Lander model at Solihull in the UK. This has got to be my favourite “off roader”. As for the more sporty image I would select the Dodge Viper GTs (mean machine). Road wise, the old model Ford Mondeo does it for me.

Regardless of what the West makes of his leadership, to other Arabs who are fed up with US support for Israel and US sanctions against various nations in the region causing famine and strife Saddam is a “hero”. US threats against Iraq only increase his support, not weaken it as intended. If Iraq was to attack Israel and the US and IDF responded with direct action against him, this would further increase anti-US sentiment in the region. Does the US or Israel really want this? This is the same reason the US wants to capture Osama Bin Laden instead of just killing him on sight. Can we really risk removing Saddam and causing widespread rioting in Saudi (possibly leading to an event similar to the Iranian Revolution)?

    RE: Israel vs Palestine

Please, no one take this post personal, but I am really getting confused about who is being made out to be the victim here.
As mentioned before, I’m Irish by birth but have been living in Britain for what must be 13 years. “So what?” I hear you all cry.
Though I lived in Dublin, many of my relatives lived North of the border. In 1983, two of my cousins were murdered by several drunk off duty Para’s in Belfast following a “scuffle” between Catholic and Protestant civilians. These were two members of my family that I loved and cared for and now will never see again. This could be seen as an act of aggresion by an occupying force, but unlike our Palestinian friends NEVER DID I FEEL THE NEED TO STRAP EXPLOSIVES TO MY BODY AND DRIVE INTO A PACKED CAFE!!! Yes, for a short time I hated the British for what they had done. However, I am a Catholic who believes in tolerance and forgiveness. I bear no ill will against the people I now live with and several years ago I trained with the Para’s, the very regiment that my cousins murderers work with.

If Islam claims to be tolerant, how can Muslim clerics across the world publically support such acts of horror???
The people who commit these horrific acts are nothing short of murderers (just like the Real I.R.A.)and we should treat them as such!!!

    RE: Israel vs Palestine

Short answer is the Arabs will do nothing, simple!!!
This is hardly a new conflict, it has been brewing for decades. It’s a bloody mindless conflict, granted, but not new!!!

If on the other hand the Arabs were to respond, would they be a potent force? They are not going to stop the oil supply. Imagine what would happen if they did:

    1) Military support by Britain, France and the US would halt.
    2) Political relations with the West would collapse.
    3) Western and Eastern industrial support would halt.
    4) Alignment between each nation would begin to fade.

Also, none of the nations in the region could touch Israel in a conflict. Syrias mainly Soviet or Russian equipment is poorly kept. Jordans equipment is outclassed, though they do have some credible equipment (F-16s and AH-1s), Saudi Arabias forces are too widespread (it would take weeks to plan any offensive and get logistical problems sorted), Iraq (well, Iraq is Iraq), Egypt could find itself on the recieving end of the IDF Army and Lebanon is religiously mixed.
Libya and Algeria have no real means to attack Israel (out side of a few Su-24 Fencers and MiG-25 Foxbats, and I guess some SRBMs).

Combined with all of this, do you think the US would allow Israel to be threatened? (Come to think of it, do you think Turkey would allow Israel to be threatened?)

RE: MID EAST :PEACE IS THE SOLUTION.

These terrorist attacks are really getting out of hand. I have nothing against the Palestinian people as a whole – being Irish I know what it is to have your homeland occupied by an outside force – and I know that my “county men” in the Real I.R.A. are not guilt free.
However, ANY people who can try to justify the MURDER of innocent civilians are nothing short of barbarians!!! Islam is one of the most tolerant religions on the face of this planet (and one of the most devote). This message seems to be lost by our friends in the Middle East and various other “rogue” nations. How the hell can someone boast about massacring women and children? The images on national T.V. of Palestinians CELEBRATING these acts are revolting beyond believe – SO MUCH FOR TOLERANCE!!! At least the I.R.A. give warnings to the British police when a bomb is about to explode (NO I’M NOT TRYING TO PRAISE THE I.R.A.).
