Just a couple from me. I was half a mile up from Ian and watched the runs of the Bucc and Victor. Amazing to think its over 3 years since the last run of Lindy and 2 weeks ago the Bucc had its engine out to sort out a seal…
Ian getting in position for his pictures… must admit never seen him drive so fast. oh i am going to get a slap for that one!
Thought I would put a few pics from Sunday too. Just like to say a massive thanks to the Guys for making my trip so special and making me feel part of the team.
First off was The Buccaneer

And it was the first time in about 20 years that 2 victors were in the same place

Then after the Dakota Runs which was very impressive to see the old girl actually getting her engines working. It was on to Lindy
Ian admiring the great work they had done over the past year. Up close its fantastic

Graham and help were fixing the Jack and threatening the jack with the second hammer of doom, the first one is in the car! then putting them back into the aircraft.

Then it was a little ceremony to read the Book of Roger before starting the dry engine runs.

It was meant to be a run on one engine but due to some spam being behind her they couldnt do it. I got to fulfill a dream of actually getting in a Victor cockpit. Its a lot more roomy than a Vulcans I must admit. and getting out of her was fun and I have the bruises to show for it.

Will be down there on Sunday to see the Run and I cant wait. See you all there.
All of the Avro Athena Trainers were bulldozed into a pit at the side of Woodford airfield, which is now part of the football pitch. might be worth a look.
Down to a Sunless Sea.. by David Graham. Its no a historic story but it does involve a 5 engined 747 that is mid Atlantic when WW3 begins below them and what happens next.
Great story but as it was produced in 1977 some of is a little bit far fetched..cuban army in Ireland? but some of it is appropriate, for instance America is in a deep financial crisis and the oil has gone.
Burtonwood… just to see the those B36 landing over warrington!
Not only that but when she was grounded at Southend, I thought the reason for that was corrosion in the main spar or some other major work. Have they sorted all that out, or plan to do more than change the engines to make her airworthy?
I think you are thinking of the Lincoln/Lancaster test bed. This Lancaster was based at Squires Gate/ Blackpool airport.
I talked to the guys at Avro Historical Society at woodford 3 years ago, before it closed and they have been to Esat Kirkby to examine the spars and they say after checking them that they are in great condition.
howard what is left from the die cast stuff? and can you give me a list of what is left
This front end was the proceedures demonstrator at woodford and was used to show potential customers what the cockpit was like. the last time i saw it was 1990 and it was fully equipped and powered up. such a shame it has been reduced to this.:(
propper rogues Gallery and i am sure i have seen you lot at a soup kitchen. dont worry I am doing it too and look like i have been though a hedge backwards!
In all seriousness all of you have done an amazing job as it didnt look that good when she was in service! many thanks to all of you for the updates and jokes, over the past few months.
you deserve recognition for this too.
the cockpit in question is XV263, a Nimrod AEW3 that was an instructional airframe at Finningley. the fuselage went on to be a testbed for the MRA4 program.
The pictures of 823 as live is a little bit deceiving. the nav lights are led’s in there and the cockpit was a torch. I was there with martin when he took that amazing picture.
they will light up the aircraft there and you can get some amazing shots.
alas the last one only had myself and 3 other people. if you are interested, give the museum a call and if there is enough interest then they might so another one but they need about 15 people for it.
hope that helps
Taff if you can fix this I will buy you a massive box of Jaffa cakes… and they will come from the factory!
Blimey that went quickly Ian.! when is the next Thunder run?
There is already a website that charts all the avro aircraft from day one. hope this helps with your amazing endeavour!
