Just a note, on a recent visit to Woodford I was told 603 will NOT be scrapped due to the high cost of de fuelling and hazardous goods removal. The inspection will take place but I don’t know how or when though.

    Dont shoot the messenger….

I was at a boot sale last year and was looking at this forlorn lightning picture that was dusty and hanging out of the frame so I bought it for a quid and took it home and when i cleaned it up I found it had Roland Beaumont and Jimmy Dells signature on it.

I was one of the minority of people watching the Spitfire display as most of the other people were looking at the stalls and the static and was taking pictures as it went into the loop and as it came out of the loop and got it as it hit and the aftermath of the tragedy. then suddenly as the smoke rose from it everyone wanted a gorp at the wreckage. The commentator called them “ghouls” and he was right. I destroyed all pictures of the spitfire after sending some to the AAIB after a request for evidence.

The last thing I want to see is a crash where someone lost their life and even if they didn’t i still don’t want to see it!

unfortunately the same thing happens every day when there is an accident on the motorway.

So seeing the video on you tube is, yes, very shocking but in a day and age where things like this have become a spectator sport and are immune to the suffering of the poor person that the tragedy has befallen.

We live in strange times that is for sure!

1980 yep i was there, what a day that became, nearly nothing flew although i can seem to remember that the tornado f2 prototype displayed in the murk. You were allowed to walk through the Galaxy and when you are 8 that was something amazing.

Living between woodford and manchester airport has its advantages, Loads of planes, but especially vulcans.

My first sighting of the delta winged beast was at the airport when 2 came in and parked near domestic pier. It was about 1975-76 as the tridents still had the composite bea-ba scheme on them.

Then most airshows i went to from 1977 when I first saw the famous touch and vertical GO! the noise was amazing and so was the rain as was usual at woodford.

Best airshow was finningley in 1981 with the scramble, within 90 seconds 4 vulcans had took to the sky. nothing short of amazing! Worst day was when i last saw her flying at finningley in 1992 an the words farewell on the bomb doors brought a tear to my eye and yes I cried, and I am not ashamed to say that!

Then came 1982 and watched XM603 so a little flypast and landed never to fly again, A few weeks later I saw 6? land to be converted into k2 tankers ( my school window over looked the woodford flightline), about 4 weeks or so later they started to be flight tested , and my education went for a burton!.

April 1984 when 50 sqn dispanded and they did a 4 ship flypast and display. I sat and watched that as i left the shcool to go home.
