Found this on a website and it was the miles company who invented it in 1943

in 1942 the Air Ministry and the Ministry of Aviation approached Miles Aircraft with a top-secret contract for a turbojet research plane designed to reach supersonic speeds. Designed to meet specification E.24/43, which called for an aeroplane capable of flying over 1,000 mph (more than twice as fast as any that had flown previously in level flight). The Miles M.52 had many advanced features such as the ultra-thin BI-convex wings , an annular air intake, an all-moving tailplane (which was built and tested on the Miles “Gillette Falcon” in 1943) and a complete escape capsule for the pilot. The engine was to be a Power Jet W2/700 with afterburner and a specially ducted fan to increase the airflow.

XM575 is the last surviving vulcan of the very last ‘public’ QRA at Raf Finningley on the 19th september 1981. She was retired to east midlands airport. Then in 1985 ther wer plans afoot to fly her to Bruntinghorpe with help from Bae who came and started to restore her to flying contition for this one off flight,

she was given a civil reg G-blmc i think and the plan was approved by the CAA but alas the money ran out and she remained at EMA till this day.

Just think if 575 had gone to brunty maybe 558 would be a pile of scrap now.

there was the f1-11 that thought barton was woodford (true), then there was the A40 mermaid that had 8 attempts at landing at woodford in 1994, the guy couldnt speak english and anatoli the su27 pilot was in the pub having a few jars had to be borught in to talk him down after he had gone past manchester, barton and even hawarden. The conversation on the radio was quite funny.

Have just bought a reel of 8mm film off ebay taken at Finningley in 1981.

roger you will really enjoy finningley from 1981. It will probably have a vulcan scramble and the first appearance of concorde there too. lucky devil! The best thing for you to do is get it transfered to dvd.

think that is bad. go to the kings road in london and an antiques shop has a polished silver ejector seat for about £4,500 and that is without webbing and padding.

    “Learning To Fly”

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
    Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction holding me fast, how
Can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can’t keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to guide my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension that’s learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
Can’t keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night
There’s no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, A state of bliss
Can’t keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
