Its amazing that the massive majority of the films on the list are from the 60’s and 70’s. I think it was just the right era for making war films. The ‘germans’ were now are friends and I think a longer view was taken of history rather than the more jingoistic films of the 40’s and 50’s. My top two remain Zulu and BofB. I would also throw in ‘Battle of the River Plate’ and one of my childhood favorites ‘Kelley’s heroes’ for its comedy value. Compared to the modern portrayal of war(pacific, Saving Private Ryan) the films of that era are tame but they show a satisfied view of war. After all who would really like to see what it was like to go down in a burning Hurricane? I hope the likes of the BofB, and The Dambusters are never remade because they were of their time and reflected the time the movie was set in.

I think all you have to do is watch ‘Guy Martins Spitfire’ to answer this. They showed the actual wreckage and they was pretty much nothing incorporated in to the ‘replica’. Lets face it the only ‘new’ Spitfires (not mentioning Burma) are going to be wrecks that have been in the ground for many years. If you use those I doubt if anybody has a issue. I have always wonderd if you got hold of a 100% complete Spit (think Southampton, Potteries museum etc) how much would be discarded to restore it to flying condition?

I think anybody who gets off the ar%e and organizes anything should be applauded. So what if it is amateurish, they are doing something. There are many music festivals organised in a similar way, I know somebody who does it. Yes they are not massive events but neither are many airshows. I’m involved as a volunteer at a event this year and it can be daunting. We will not be having a flying display. Probably last year we would have had a few local acts but you can’t even have a local pilot doing some aerobatics without tonnes of paperwork and cash. I have never been to Thockmorton, and have no idea where it is ,but these sort of shows are the lifeblood for the smaller acts that work at small shows. As has been said you loose these sort of shows and you loose the acts that go with them, forever. Once people stop displaying, aircraft get sold and pilots go on to other things and it is pretty much impossible to start again in 5 years.

I am shocked by this news but thinking about it the BofB halls needs a revamp. Although the BofB was the RAF’s finest hour, and it needs to be featured, does it make sense to have a 1/4 of the museum(not floor space but buildings) dedicated to a conflict that lasted a few months out of a hundred years of history? I’m at the younger end of the enthusiast visitors (46) and for those younger they will have little personal reference to WW2 let alone the BofB. My dad was bombed out in the blitz ,aged 1 but people in their 20’s/30’s and younger are unlikely to have living relatives from WW2.
So how about a BofB corner rather than a whole building? This may sound like heresy but why not return the likes of the CR42, He111 (not a BofB aircraft after all) to their home land? This would leave Spitfire, Hurricane, Gladiator, Me109 and JU88 in a Bob exhibition? In return the RAFM would have funds to fill some of its gaps.
Away from the BoB collection Hendon completely omits Transport Command. Foe me a Dakota is a must for any revamped Hendon. Would also been good to see more of the non-European theaters of WW2. If only somebody knew where we could get a desert air force survivor?!

Im pretty sure Hamilcars were disposed of at Brize, Thruxton, Broadwell and Weathersfield. I think the last one was withdrawn in 1949?

Hi there will no no parking at the terminal end. All parking will be on the old market site with a free shuttle bus every 5 min. Only those with business at the flying clubs etc will be parking in the normal car park, otherwise we would have about 50 parking spaces!

Yes the normal landing fees are rather steep for light aircraft. All static aircraft are free, as are the first 50 fly-in visitors. Also a chance for the first fifty to win two prizes of 200 ltrs of fuel.We have outside caterers as well as The Bushe cafe.

Would be great to see this historic aircraft back in the air. Far better looking than the ugly PR9!

G-BZVW and BZVX are still on the register, think they were/are at Wickenby? Would love to see one in the air but don’t think it will be soon by the look of these photos http://www.fightercontrol.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=75472

The jumble element is definitely in decline. I have been a Popham fixture since the early 80’s and been to every one of these events. Personally I am there for the aircraft, full stop. Im a spotter, and so were 2/3rds of those arriving by road on Saturday and Sunday. This year was ‘good’ on Saturday, but not quite the ‘excellent’ we had 2 years ago, because of the weather. Management has changed a couple of times at popham recently and hopefully this event will improve in future? Trouble is it always seems to be bad weather on the Monday!

    At RAF Hartford Bridge/Blackbushe

The Ely just to the East on the A30. Later used by the US Navy for visiting aircrew in the 50’s.
The Anchor Inn on Vigo lane. Back in the 50’s/60’s still had graffiti carvings from WW2 Boston crews, removed in a refit!
The Cricketers on Cricket Hill. The Cricket pitch has not been used since WW2 when it was occupied by barrack huts. The pub remained open and was a popular billet.
The Crown and Cushion just to the south, now my local.
Amazingly all these are still going!

The CAA could have also issued a restricted permit to test and ferry, happens sometimes with various types. They know, as well as we do, the Hunter is not a inherently dangerous aircraft so test and ferry is no more dangerous than any other aircraft until the final AAIB report is out

It’s only the CAA that grounded the Hunters. They are now Jordanian military aircraft hence no grounding. Same as the two ZZ serialed Hunters that HHA use are not grounded.
