as a museum consumer I can see a couple of issues.
Stagnation of new exhibits. This has already happened with the lack of Lynx, Gazelle, Seaking, Harrier GR9, Tornado F3 in out voluntary run museums. One the Tornado retires there is likely to be nothing coming from the Military for years. As has been pointed out volunteers are going to be a big issue. There wont be the early retirees in good health to be active volunteers. We are going to all be working until we are nearly 70 and will be claped out after that. I think we will still have WW2 ‘reproduction’ aircraft as we have WW1 replicas but the later jets will disappear. With less and less people serving in the armed forces the veterans in 30 years will, hopefully, be few and far between. I guess I was the last generation (im 46) to grow up with a substantial number of WW1 and WW2 veterans? Will there be the interest still in aviation when we just fly around in metal tubes with no charterer and there are no more live ‘war stories’?
While I agree with being specific, that’s pretty close to being a pedant.
How many people on this forum call all DC-3s/C-47s Dakotas whether or not they operated with the RAF or Commonwealth?
or C-53, or R4D! If its in the present day they are all Daks to be but historically I agree.
Interesting film. Seems a very long take off run? But the take off run dows show a Hurricane, and possibly a Hornet Moth, plus another single englined type by the tower.
There’s no secret kit left onboard although the antennas that got removed to reduce the load height give away what the aircraft was used for.
As for Mr Bond’s Islander someone has already suggested 993 gets painted black!
Back to the subjects of secrets, the object under the blue tarpaulin is prohibited by the Director of Special Forces from being put on public display but all the spotters know what it is.
is that the same secret thing that I had no problem photographing, and sitting it on a tour of Arborfield? Even though the staff said they could not see it! Which also meant we could not see me photograph it.Having seen said thing flying around for many years I finally found the serial, only visible from 10ft away!
If its going to be more Spitfires it needs to be an accurate flying recreation of the prototype (surprised no one has done that yet) and representing the other end of the line, a Spiteful, otherwise I will take a Gloster Bamel and a Hall Bulldog thank you very much!
Trouble is you would been the dataplate from the prototype or the CAA would deem it a new design and that would cost a hell of a lot more money and tonnes of paperwork.
Well its a strange old word. This was one of four in store at Shawbury. Initially the tours at Shawbury included the hangar that they were in but no photos were allowed of the Islanders due secret kit. Of course some photos appeared and tours of that hangar were stopped. Low and behold one of the secret Islanders makes it to a museum! I hope what ever secret kit it was has been removed?
Miles Master 1 for me, realistic now there are a few more flying Kestrels. Failing that I like the idea of a Battle.
If the are landing on 27L then try Myrtle Avenue just by Hatton Cross underground station. This gives you a good view of the arrivals, at Hatton Cross you will be even closer, there is parking along Hatton Road or Cains Lane. There is also the Visitor Center on the northern permiter road . If they land on 9L (over Windsor) then the McDonalds on the A4 towards Langley offers some views.
I visited Hendon on Saturday with my dad(ex RAF national service). Milestones was looking rather empty now the Pioneer and Provest have gone. They must have had to move everything on the floor to get them out so why not put something else in there (maybe a Hunter or Spitfire?) rather than leaving a big gap. BofB hall still as was , nice to see the Defiant after its visit to Rochester. The Lysander is in need of some restoration work, paint peeling under the wings and looking tired. Food in the cafe was decent, and not massively pricey. WW1 exhibition was impressive but I am not a fan of stringing up such valuable aircraft. The original museum still looked fine and it was a pleasant day out.
Nothing wrong with the original (F-5/’Mig’ apart) it was great entertainment and did wonders for USN recruiting at the time. I wonder if North Korea will be the baddie again? Atleast they have access to proper Migs this time. I just wonder if the USN will play ball with their F/A-18’s? Will be pretty pointless if the USN is not involved.
I was at the show aged 7, but sadly have no recollection of it what so ever! The Dak would have been one of the Fairey Surveys aircraft, possibly G-ALWC. Nice to see some views of the old ATA/Fairey hangars on the north side, these historic buildings should have been saved.
The one at farnborough could also do with a repaint. They did some work on the surround of the support a couple of years ago but the ‘aircraft’ has not been touched. Would be nice to see this local landmark in a camo scheme.
Thanks for the input guys, just need to remain in the good books for some parole!

talking of G-AWPH has anybody seen this in the last 10 years? It has a reciently expired CofA but is never reported anywhere. I know several people who live around the area of his strip but they say they have not seen it for years.
This looks like a interesting project, any plans for some real aircraft, perhaps a Blackpool built Hunter? The airport could certainly do with something good happening after its problems. One think I would say the name is rather clunky and those of us in the south have no idea where the Fylde Coast is, Blackpool yes, Flyde no.
