There are three still current on the US register N166Y,N7650E and N7651E but no idea if they are airworthy. Plus of course still 20 or so with the Italian Coast Guard and Garda de Finanzia. The 7 in Australia seem to all be in museums.
I don’t think any are at Blackbushe, except perhaps the USAF, or maybe USN C-54/R5D that could be anywhere. Looking at the N reg DC-4 Im thinking Bovingdon, due to the USAF steps with XX Air Division on?
Im 99% sure it is Croydon, the black and white wall in the background appears in the book ‘Croydon-the peaceful years’ in some of the late 30’s photos. Lufthansa JU52’s were daily visitors in the late 30’s.
What a pleasant surprise Rob!!
Dont suppose you can recollect what colour the cheatline was? We think we have worked it out but always nice to get independant confirmation 🙂
Jon
Hi Jon have been told the cheatline was Navy Blue, hope you don’t have a totally different color!?
Rob
Hi Jon Im afraid it was from before my time, they are from a local spotters collection I am going through. I see if he can remember. In the mean time here is another photo of MLZ about to cross the A30 to the hangars.
Keep up the good work with the Prince, found this photo taken during her Blackbushe days when she was based with Stewart Smith and Co. Taken from the then tower looking towards Airwork as she taxiys for runway 24.
You need that hefty book ‘Falklands-the air War’ which I no longer have. From what I remember the P2’s tended to turn tail as soon as they got within Sea Harrier CAP range(200miles IIRC). Several 707’s were intercepted during the voyage from Asencision Is but not fired on until Argentina was warned they would now be. IIRC the Learjets were used as navigation escorts for some of the bombers but turned away before coming in Sea Harrier range. I dont think the Trackers operated from land as they didn’t have the range?
As far as I know Brian is still alive and well and still living in Feltham?Had a conversation with Tony Eastwood at the Aviation Hobby Shop a couple of months ago about Brians collection as I want to use some in my Blackbushe book.Tony says he has much of the larger aircraft photos, but not the light aircraft.
Just a few from the vintage days of Blackbushe in the 50’s. USN R5D-8 50812 from Rota. The Yougoslav was one of two to visit Farnborough week 58. G-AJAY with Westminster Airways 1948.4X-FAK visited several times in early 1958.
There was a 0/400 replica registered in the 1980’s in the G-BJxx series IIRC?It was later cancelled by the CAA as I think only a few small parts had been made but would love to be proved wrong. Can we have a passenger version replica please:D.
Thanks Mark I had guessed that it was on the Odiham gate by then. Obviously a mix up in the logs I have been supplied.
I for one have increased my visits since it has become free but have seen the steady decline of the site. It used to have that airfield feel when it first opened but the urban sprawl has enveloped the site and it now just feels like a add on to a suburd that could be anywhere in London.
The galleries are a disgrace. I can remember in the 70’s and 80’s they were full of interesting dioramas and exhibitions. On my last visit I found a interesting display on the history of Hendon hidden in a corner near the Auster.I also find that the trophy case displaying, amoung others the Mc Roberston and Schlesinger air race trophys, is in a dusty corner.
The shop, although quite well stocked, is very much over priced and seems to have been dumbed down.I think its a disgrace that no Transport Command aircraft are displayed. Is this the only major world museum without a Dak’?
Hendon should be somewhere we are proud off and above all should be there to celebrate the RAF and those that served, it does neather.
When I went a couple of years ago the Viscount was to the east of the terminal. Could be seen well from the road on the other side of the airport(take the motorway exit before the airport if coming from the south). Apart from that TFN is just inter island flights with ATR’s,Iberia,Spanair, the airforce and about 30 light at the aeroclub who are very friendly. Just the ‘buckett and spade flights’ at TFS.
note Qantas is only Tuesday,Friday and Saturday at the moment. I think SQ do the evening flight with a 380 on certain days but not sure which.
Rob
Cessna 206 G-AYJU from Blackbushe in May 1979. Took off on the now disused runway 01 into a keen northerly, came within a couple of hunderd feet of two Belgian AF SF260’s.
Then several West London AC PA28’s from White Waltham on school trips(maths teacher was WW2 pilot). First airliner Virgins original 747-200 to Miami then Pan Am and United 727’s,United 737-200. Air Atlanitque Dak. Visit to Poland 1990 An-2,Mi-2,Mi-8, Wilga about US$10 each. As350 in St Lucia twice on airport shuttle.
