I remember it well, I think it traded under a couple of names in the 80’s. It was the only place that had a ‘rumours board’. the net and flight radar would have blown our minds back then. This was not related to the West Drayton shop, which is still there. I think ‘C5’ was buzdozed to build the current visitors centre area and offices?
The location of the RAFM is not going to change any time soon. Hendon is as good as you are going to get in the capital. That is the capital where all the major national museums are located, that wont change. Hendon is under a hours drive for me on a weekend, Costford is 3 or so. I have been to Hendon 30+ times, Cosford 4. I know location is all relative but for anybody, but the dedicated, south of Oxford, Cosford might as well be on Mars. Yes getting to Hendon from the tube could be made better, but I have not gone there by tube since c1985. I would like to see the return of a charge, maybe £10, as the place does seemed have turned into somewhere to deposit the kids on a winters day. I would like to see the ‘staff’ (not sure how many are volunteers?) be more knowledgeable about what is on display. The should give priority to aircraft enthusiasts and ex RAF, from my experience they are just there to try and keep order.
I just hope this revamp will itself be revamped in 5 years and some sanity will return to the place.
I am heading to a customers of my work in Battersea then walk up to the river. I’m more interested in seeing it rather than photos. Shame the formation splits up early, would been much easier to go to Northolt or somewhere nearby.
Like any hobby there are some idiots who think they have the right to see/do anything they want. The vast majority of us spotters are normal, polite people from all walks of life. Yes some of us are even married, were not all lonely saddos with no life lol!
Anybody know if the have fully reopened the Bomber Command hall? I was last there around Christmas and the right hand side was closed because it was full of dismantled aircraft. Have the sorted it out now?
Welcome to the world of spotting. North Weald is a bit of a unique case as you have to drive airside to get anywhere. As a general rule I would say stick to the cafe by Kennets hangar, and the similar area by the squadron. I would not go wandering out of these areas. There are some friendly places in the south like Elstree, Booker, Rochester, Popham , but never go into hangar uninvited. Places like White Waltham and Denham are ok if you ask on the right day to the right person. Pretty much everywhere else in the south keep to public areas. If you are at a public airfield take all the photos you want, maybe a bit different at a strip, which to me is PPR only.
US can be so different. Remember Chino in the 90’s having done Planes of Fame, we asked the guy at Yanks Museum what he thought about us going air side and it was help yourself. Spent a very happy afternoon talking to various warbird owners and restorers.
Personally I would use it to portray the RAF from 1918-40. We have the WW1 exhibition so lets have the interwar period and the BofB? I would move over DH9a, Bulldog, Wallace, Hart’s, Gladiator, Tiger Moth, Lysander and Anson (fully assembled) to join the Sunderland. The other end would be ‘BofB lite’ with Mk1 Spit, Hurricane, Bolingbroke, BF109, JU87, He111, CR42 and JU88 . I think that might just fit in, if I had room I would bring back the vimy.
I get closing the BofB hall for a time limited 100 exhibition. The BofB hall was tired and needed a face lift. So if you were to host a 100 exhibition would you only choose 5 aircraft?? DH9a yes, was in service on day 1. Spitfire definitely, Gnat not really, Seaking maybe, plastic F-35 OK shows the RAF Today. Surely the Hawker hart to represent the inter war period where the RAF almost failed to exist? Or is the thought of bombing Indian and Afghan villages too much for the snowflake generation? WW2 and ‘their finest hour’ represented by a lone Spitfire? No Hurricane, no late mk Spit? No Meteor to show the transition to the jet era? How about a Tornado? It just seems a very poor lineup.
I like the idea of Milestones themed as modern conflicts. However they moved out the Falklands relevant GR3, how about the GW Buccaneer and Victor nose, the Chinook fuselage, a VC10 nose would have been nice too?
Does anybody know if they have done anything with the galleries in this refurb? Instead of taking up exhibition space with screens etc you have all that space. I would love to go back to the RAFM of the 70’s and 80’s and revisit those galleries that wowed me so much.
And there I was hopin g to see a fully restored, or atleast painted aircraft. They will have their hands full with that restoration .
Duxford’s York is a Berlin veteran from its RAF service. I would imagine pretty much every one of the preserved Hastings participated in the airlift?
The thing with ORB’s in general is that they are as only as good as the enthusiasm of the compiler. Some that I have read are meticulous in their recordings, and an amazing source of information. Others, particularly I find the RAF Regiment, and non operational squadrons, seemed to be filled out because they had to, rather than wanting to record history. I must way I do miss the microfilm files at the TNA as it was much easier to photograph the entire ORB.
Out of interest is anybody able to list what happened to all the Afghan recoveries?
Yes the Alcock & Brown statue is still at the visitors center. Never likes that extra deck in Longshots photo. It was built as extra capacity but you were out of luck with anything on 27R/09L as the newer T1 stands got in the way. By that time I had graduated to driving, and the delights of the perimeter roads like Cairns lane.
Out of interest where was the Queens Building roof entrance? In the 70’s/80’s it was on the nearest part of the roof on the above photo. It was accessed either via stairs leading from T1, or the bridge that came across from the bus station. I guess originally there was a internal entrance?
Great photo, assume it is 1955 as the Queens Building is still being finished? Spent so much of my youth on those roofs. Was so gutted then the QB roof closed in 1986, was just left with the T2 roof until that was also closed. Difficult to imagine today just how popular the QB was in the 70’s and 80’s.
