I used to agree about a ARM version of the Meteor, but I’m wondering what kind of useful payload it could carry?
What about an Apache type cruise missile with IIR or milimetric radar sub munitions à la brimstone to pick out all the components of a S300 type batterie?

thanks Nicholas10, in a way you have answered my question then. The use of the Rafale is not tied to a carrier. This undermines the whole “we need a carrier to maintain a capability over Libya” argument a little.

Well CdG was very useful in the first days, before a base could be setup in Crete for the Rafales and Mirages. The UK being much further away, a carrier would be even more useful to them as it was to France in this particular case.

It could. Once you have brought enough stocks to sustain the Rafale operations in Crete the use of the CdG isn’t all that important. Aéronavale Rafales could even operate from Crete alongside Armée de l’air Rafales if AdlA don’t have enough numbers.

I said the engine is 20% more powerful, not that the aircraft’s TWR is 20% better and we are talking about the impact on power generation here and not about the TWR.;)
I know, but it’s a tradeoff between power generation and thrust. So basically you should take into account the overal picture and not just the thrust of the engines, unless you want to sacrifice TWR.

While I wouldn’t want to make a guess wrt how much more power the electrical systems on the Typhoon could generate in comparison to the Rafale, the fact that the engines are at least 20% more powerful is certainly an advantage.
Now now… TWR is nowhere near 20% better though.

You can see that the AASM acquiring the target while in flight with its IIR seeker and changing course to hit it right in the middle.

Well, AASM does indeed have an IIR seeker that allows it to recognise the target and adapt the end game course. IIRC there was a test where the target had deliberately been placed about 60-90m off the GPS coordinates, and the IR seeker found it and corrected the flight path to hit the target.

intersting replies, a few points:
the reason I’m interested in anti-missile systems is because I’m a UAV buff: I believe they’re the future, but they’re slow and vulnerable to enemy fighters and missiles. if you could trade missiles efficiently ($10,000 Hydra’s vs $1,000,000ish AMRAAMs and S-20s for example), UAVs would dominate the skies through sheer cheap numbers and their expendable nature
I can see that Hydra missile would be much more expensive if built for high G trajectories. however
a) I don’t agree that this will always be the case. most missile would fly by a pretty straight and predictable path, at a steady speed, not trying to avoid other aircraft or missiles, making it easy to calculate a point of interception
b) why not install the missile launchers facing the rear? combined with a forward facing pod, this would give a constant front and rear coverage
Why not install a mini CIWS with a small radar guided gun to shoot at incoming missiles?

BTW scorpion, while Captor has maybe GMTI/GMTT, integrating to the new captor-E will be a whole different ball game.
I remind you that the last versions of RDY had those modes integrated, so the fact that it’s not available yet on the RBE2 probably means that it’s not so easy to port it to PESA/AESA radars. So when Captor-E arrives in 2015 (if the recent reports are true), then it’s possible that it will lose some features compared to the mechanical captor in the begining, and catch up later on when new modes are implemented.

What I am talking about is not setting up a “safe” interception route but setting up an evading course at the edge of the enemy detection range , which is vastly more difficult .Cheers .

The autopilot of the Typhoon can automatically fly attack profiles and interception manoeuvres or as a pilot puts it:
“Typhoon is probably a manned-unmanned fighter”
Given the blanket statements you make about DASS, and what Scorpion can tell us about DASS capabilities, I would certainly take Scorpion’s word most of the time.
Maybe SPECTRA can do all of this better, but how would we know for sure?
