The undercarriage is actually different on the F3, it’s been stretched so it would never be identical to the IDS.
I don’t think it’d be feasible to put a Typhoon engine on them either. It’d be like shoving a massive engine in a mini.
There’s at least one Mini with a V8 actually
I think they ditched the IR seeker of the OSF because they feel it doesn’t warrant the cost when the Mica IR can do part of the job.
I suspect its a cost reduction measure, and I also suspect they are waiting for some progress in IR technology before the add a new one to the OSF that is really going to improve over the current one at a cheaper price. Pretty much the same way they waited for lower priced modules for the european AESAs.

Where did the pics go? I can’t see them.

That’s where jackonicko will chip in and tell us how a PESA RBE2 was a dead end and a mistake :diablo:
It should take you about 50 minutes tu go from Orly to the RER station of “le bourget”… then I don’t know if you ought to take a bus from the train station to the airport or just walk there… Count 10 to 15 minutes either way I suppose.
Add in how much time you need to check out of the plane and actually leave Orly.

Arcadish unrealistic games are definately not to my liking.
I have fond memories of lengthy dogfights in my Fw 190D9 in forgotten battles with a La 7, or even one with a Spitfire Mk IX which ended in a draw as we ended up losing eachother in the clouds after a few minutes of hard manoeuvers…
Blowing stuff up while looking at the scenery? Yawn :p
Haven’t you read any of what has been posted?
There have been no accusations of corruption in the Typhoon sale.
The accusations relate to the Tornado & Hawk sales.
The Saudis demanded a halt to the investigation into Tornado & Hawk sales, or they would not buy Typhoons.
Gottit?
Shutting down a whole enquiry because your customer threatened to cancel its order is corruption just the same.
Corruption doesn’t necessarily involve just money you know.

On some of the answers to my post you take them so much out of context that it makes my eyes bleed. When I was speaking of bribes stealing Rafale or Gripen orders it was hypothetical talk with, IIRC grim’s points. I wasn’t refering to any of the “competitions” there has been between both planes. I’m aware there wasn’t a competition in SA, and Austria should have gone to the Gripen or the EF. I think Gripen C/D would have suited them well enough for cheaper. Too bad BAE made the Gripen marketing campaign :diablo:
I’m not going to bother replying to the rest of the stuff because it’s been done over and over.

I lol’d. The fact you’re not competing in Greece or Oman and that you are barely able to stop yourselves being kicked out of India was partly behind it. Chances are you will win in the UAE though, no idea about Kuwait and Switzerland probably won’t even buy a fighter
UAE isn’t really a competition I think. So the Rafale won’t really “win” there just like the Tyffie didn’t “win” SA. It’s a pity the swiss won’t buy a fighter because it was probably the place where the competition would be the fairest IMHO.
I’m yet to see much evidence that the Typhoon is worse than the Rafale, it does what it was designed to do very well.
Maybe it wasn’t designed to do the right thing in the first place 😉
Certainly it wasn’t designed to do as many things.
And I don’t understand why people keep using the fact that it is a multinational fighter as a sign of weakness. It was designed to be multinational from the outset for all the advantages that brings instead of costing the British taxpayer billions more than it needed to spend to replicate a capability that half of Europe also needed. I’m fairly sure Britain could build it’s own fighter if it was pushed to do so.
It’s a weakness in the light of the current atmosphere where Britain and maybe Italy don’t seem to be interested in an attack version of the plane while opting for a F35/EF fleet, while Germany wasn’t supposed to buy any. So does it mean Germany will be stuck to finance the T3/4 alone to replace their tornados? Are they going to be forced to buy the F35 too?
Also, it’s not fair to use the Tranche 1 and 2 aircraft as a comparison for versatility when they were designed to be built less capable and upgraded to the proper standard later to spread costs. The actual full capability tranche 3 (or 3B now) is a more accurate
How can you compare for instance a Rafale F3 roadmap which is funded for 2011/2012 with a Tranche 3 standard that hasn’t been defined yet and which isn’t even sure to be ordered?
He then repeated the suggestion that the SFO enquiry had been improperly quashed.
lol
I then posted a lengthy rejoinder pointing out recent examples of (proven!) French bribery, and explaining exactly why the points made were wrong.
Well as I said who doesn’t do it? The issue is here that the fact that the Tyffie got more exports than the Rafale is often quoted by you and others as a proof that it is better than the Rafale. But it isn’t necessarily so when they use massive bribes to sell it. In that respect it is very relevant to point out that the Typhoon doesn’t necessarily get selected because of some superiority.
I also suggested that all of the French posters here who have a ‘chip on their shoulders’ about the Brits really do need to get over it.
I haven’t seen fonk lately so I wonder who you may be refering to. I think it’s just a way from you to distract from the debate and drag the discussion to another level. No one said anything about the brits other than EADS bribes its customers. And in the case of the Austrian deal it’s EADS germany. Noone denies that the french would do it should the opportunity arise.
Heck, you might even be glad for us when we do win the odd aircraft competition goes our way, just as we’ll be happy for you on the day that Rafale finally gets its export campaign into the air with a first customer.
Not quite when it means bribes deprived the Rafale from its first export order. Or the Gripen from a fair deal. There’s no reason to be happy that the cheater won.
That said I’d be happy if you guys ditched that F35 thingie and spent the buck instead on a really multirole tranche 3 with all the goodies to make it relevant for CAS/penetration missions.
They way it is now the Rafale makes much more sense for a single type customer unless all you need is air policing (or money on your bank account in the bahamas).

Thank you PII :diablo:
Aspis reminds me of Arthuro… 😀
Well actually Australia sure obliged and bent over.

I think it proves that canards are not that useful if they are not integrated in the design from the start, or if they are used as mere control surfaces.
Nic
Well I quite like the EC725…
The Puma and derivative was really a great design. Still relevant today.
