No offense, but why can you not accept the possibility that Rafale lost because it wasn’t the best fit for the customer????

South Korea….. should war come, would not a Korean F-15 be beneficial……US can service and arm Korean jets and vice versa! one less chain of spare parts to have……

That probably accounted in the selection of the planes, but then why open a competition if you want the same plane than your ally, just buy the same plane than your ally.

Austria chose Typhoon because Germany has them, and the good favour by buying typhoon(even just the ‘we have the same stuff’) with britain, spain, germany and italy(and possibly switzerland and saudi and greece) far out weighs the gain of buy rafale……

It was a competition between EF and Gripen.

dont get me wrong, but France has a bad history of doing what it needs for itself and leaving allies to flap in the wind(ie NATO withdrawl)-could that be part of the customers thought process as well?

France isn’t the puppet of any country. You are supposed to always stick up for your allies if your ally is at risk. When your ally makes a stupid decision to go get stuck in a needless war that they can’t win, and you advise them not to, but they go anyway… too bad for them. Being an ally doesn’t mean being stupid.

Besides if you take this as an argument, then the purchase of a US plane is an absolute no-go, since the US are much more restrictive than the french as to what can be done with their planes.

Dont get me wrong, Rafale looks beautiful, and does a great job, and would possibly do a great job in Brazil, but to suggest that the bribing of the austrian air force chief was what sealed the deal is laughable considering the selection process and review to maintain there neutrality would surely catch anysuch favourtism and the saudi deal was sorted back in the 80s-90s me thinks!

Then I suppose they paid the austrian air force chief because they had too much money and didn’t know what to do with it. 😀

The only allegations of bribery in Saudi Arabia relate to the earlier Al Yamamah (Typhoon/Hawk) programme and those charges remain unsubstantiated. The UK’s senior law officer decided that there was insufficient evidence to justify further action, and the circumstances of the payments (from HMG to the Saudi MODA, using BAE as the channel, but with all payments authorised by the UK government) have been made pretty clear.

There is absolutely no evidence whatsoever of bribes relating to the Typhoon contract, and it is dishonest and dishonourable to suggest otherwise. Were your professor to make such allegations, he’d find himself sued.

Cut the BS, the evidence hasn’t been unearther because they shelved the file when the saudis threatened to cancel the Typhoon deal. For that alone one could argue the Typhoon deal is full of bribes, be it money or legal complacency doesn’t change the fact that it’s bribery.

Everybody does it, and BAe certainly isn’t the last one to resort to those tactics, quite the contrary, so spare us the hypocrisy!

How can chaltiel say the aircraft locked the target without a single emission, when it had to emit the laser beam of the rangefinder? That’s pretty deceiving…

Also, I don’t understand why the OSF or an IIR sensor couldn’t range a target if the 3D shape of the target is stored in a databased. If you see a 3D object and know it’s size, then surely you can figure out the range by comparing the 3D shape’s size that you detected to the dimentions of the 3D object stored in the database. Or are those sensors still not powerful enough to get the shape of enemy planes?

The more I learn about the Rafale and the surrounding programmes (AASM, Mica IR/EM, Spectra, and now Elisa…) the more I am impressed about the plane. I think it’s awesome than France was capable alone of providing such an awesome weapons system.
