Even with John McCain at the helm and Lockheed Martin in charge of developing the new missile, the US would struggle to run out of Tomahawks before it was ready.

I checked Rafale beats everyone in fuel economy and empty/loaded ratio ?

    http://www.aviatia.net/versus/rafale-vs-eurofighter/

Is it stealth or supercruise ?

It does supercruise at about 1.3 mach with 4 AAMs (or is it 6) & a central fuel tank.

F414 is now 20 years old and no more SH are being built (roughly)
so GE will seek to sell their engines to whomever are asking, Gripen NG may well be their best cow for that engine

Yes you’re right about the engine indeed.

Let’s take a simple example. Boeing might build the SH as a “Gripen competitor”, but this doesn’t mean GE doesn’t have the right to make more money with another partner, does it? Also, I wouldn’t say “at no cost”, but “at lower costs”.

Sure GE should be able to sell to anyone they please. However since the dev cost was paid by some other customer (US government), then cost shouldn’t be as low as it is for the customer who shelled the development money.

Or else something is very wrong. Or they don’t mind because they have ulterior motives.

I agree with your post and I think Saab is very good at what it does. But what is fishy is why other partners play along when it means they are shooting themselves in the foot. Esp the european partners.

The benefit of forcing them to an open competition is that LM won’t be able to decide the price it wants, it will have to submit an offer that is going to be compared to its competitors, and it will be harder for them to milk the canadian government. I’m sure they will somehow, but it will be tougher, and they probably are going to have to grease more hands.

So yes it’s a victory to for its competitors insofar as its going to strip them from some cash that could be used to give some other customer a discount to get an advantage in some other market.

They do it in part by picking components that have already been developed by others; for instance the F414 all R&D costs were sunk already; the IRST system is just an evolution of the Typhon IRST; the EWS is an evolution of the current; the Raven AESA is evolved from an existing Selex AESA; Elbit also provides some sensors (was it RWR?) with R&D costs already sunk, etc. etc.

Yeah it’s been developped by others and they get ToT for free? How come EF is content letting their competitor get technology that was developped for Typhoon at some cost. Same with the F414 for a SH direct competitor in Brazil for example.

Ok sunk costs have been paid already, but they need ToT to develop said technologies & integrate them. That can’t be cheap can it? How come all partners play along even if it means an unfair advantage to saab if they get the same technology at no cost.

No really something is fishy. I’ll keep my opinion to myself on the why I think it works that way though.

There is sometinf about Gripen NG (and i’m a fan), more specifically about SAAB PR bothering me. On one side they say that the technology is mature, trials near done, software ready (btw finally MS21 software, same in swiss eval) etc. and on the other hand that there is plenty of spae for development and intellectual property for future buyers…

There’s also the question how Sweden can develop a fighter program that’s about half as expensive as the Rafale program for less airframes, for a small country, while we are said by everyone and their mother that it’s impossible to develop a fighter alone even if your name is France, Germany or the UK. There’s the question of all those new upgrades that seem to cost nothing to develop. Gripen NG being allegedly less expensive than the previous ones, despite having to develop a whole new GaN EW suite, an AESA while completely redesigning the internals.

The “leaks” that has been around the Swiss process in general and Gripen in particular makes me wonder who are behind those leaks?

    It must be somebody who:

    1. Have some very strong intelligence resources (ie. a major organization with intelligence experts)
    2. Have a strong interest in stopping the Swiss Gripen deal from happening.

Sweden (and Switzerland for that matter) probably don’t have the resources to find out who are behind those leaks.

Anyway as LO says since Brazil has decided for Gripen, Switzerland is less important for Gripen’s future success. I wonder if those “meddling” in Switzerland will reduce their activities, or start to shift them to Brazil?

Has it occurred to you that the swiss air force, who didn’t want the Gripen in the first place may be behind the leaks?

Or else who do you have in mind?

Conformal radars may very well be the future, but we arent there yet. 200 degree radar coverage is pretty good for an interim solution.

It is, but then again before the MLU it seems offboard targetting is the thing. Shoot & beam is so 80ies!

A quick calc gives 988, ofc with a margin of error of a few %

Here is a higher rez pic http://www.aviationweek.com/Portals/AWeek/Gripen%20Radar.jpg <– Obviously they run DotNetNuke 🙂

Speaking of the radar, this graphic show why a moving dish is so important during sc gimbal turns.
    http://www.aereo.jor.br/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/Selex-Galileo-Raven-ES-05-AESA-2.jpg

Since the next step (for the latest fighter’s MLU’s starting in the twenties (or thirties)) is conformal 360 AESA coverage for both detection and EA, a rotating plate is a dead end in my opinion.

Very easy. We do not have the excact data for the whole time in question and what is involved in the estimated program cost for that time-scale. The original one for the A-D is no longer valid and has to be reduced by several billions! Just the revised one by switching to E-D upgrades has some credibility. But is still an estimated one as well.

Except I gave the A-D cost through 2009 & not the whole program cost, added to the E/F cost for 2013 onwards. I didn’t give the cost from the C/D program through 2040 or something!
