Perhaps you should check on the epitomy of medium fighters, the JSF.

Other medium fighters include the MiG-29 and the F-18 Hornet. See the service records.

I’m not really a big fan of the medium since they don’t seem to hold up against their bigger brothers like Fulcrum vs. Flanker, or Hornet vs. Tomcat or Hornet vs. Eagle. At the same time, they don’t seem to have that much of a range, combat, or payload advantage over smalls like Hornet vs. Viper or Fishbed vs. Flogger.

if you believe that crobato…. then how come you argue in the other thread that light fighters like the FC-1 can hold up to the Su-3x’s ??

By the way, the “idiots” from IDF-AF have had let the Iranian airliner come down at Uvda, not red your post over locations near by. :p
What me angers most is the nonsense over dangers posted, which did not exists really, when looking to the facts at hand.
I am shure, that the 747 have had found its way to Larnaca without fighters near by. 😎

you know that the dangers which were posted did not exist really only after the threat was examined…..

and without that you just can’t let your guard down…. you just know that a bomb is comin…. what kinda bomb ? it could be anything…. it could be a hoax as it turned out….

But as far as ISRAEL is concerned…. the Israeli govt.wouldn’t mind comments made by angry people like you on internet forums…. won’t cause them any harm….

but if the hoax had turned out to be true and had the 747 detonated in mid air (again we dont know what kinda explosive) over a populated area…. it would have been serious trouble for them…. and also they would have to deal with dual casualties… the passengers onboard and the people trapped on the ground….

and mind you the 747 is no cessna….

Or how about lighter weight fighters like Rafale and EF2000? They are certainly not as light as Gripen/LCA/J-10/F-16 but they are not as heavy as F-15K/Su-35/F-35

how about classifying them as medium weight fighters then…. ? 🙂

then we would need to come at an optimum solution of Heavy-Medium-Light weight fighters…. 🙂

whatever the outcome of this current discussion…. i guess one just cannot come at a definitive ‘LWF’ or ‘heavy fighter’ for an airforce….

even for a medium sized air force, both types remain indispensible…..

the question remains -> what is the optimum combination of both the aircraft types such that the air force stays within budget and that its operational requirements are met to the fullest….

only light fighters or heavy fighters for an air force is just not feasible….

**EDITED BY google: Please stay on topic.

9/11 was something special. Several aircraft just after take-off with high fuel-load. 400 metre high twin towers to fly in with high speed and which crumbled afterwards.

i guess i should have been more specific when i mentioned “9/11”

actually what i was trying to convey was that the death toll in a bomb laden 747 crash over an urban area could reach or even surpass “9/11” proportions…

and when we say bomb laden, we are not sure about what type of bomb is there in the plane… could be a grenade… could be an IED…. could be anything…. so i guess we must always prepare for the worst….

Re: “several aircraft“…. if i remember correctly, the WTC towers were hit by two… right ?

There is no problem about Israels wish, to divert the flight to Larnaca as a precaution measure. Nothing more and nothing less. 🙂

absolutely…. and there is no need to make a hue and cry over it….

if Israel felt that the aircraft was threatening to her…. she did not allow the aircraft to land……… and it is also within her sovereign rights to do that i guess….

“Way to go Isreal”!? Wow, your love of that country is intense

Personally, I prefered the RAFs approach when confronted with a similiar problem,

a couple of Tornado F3s escorted an Olympic Airways airliner down, the plane was searched, nothing was found and the flight continued….no jet fighter threatened to shoot down a civilian airliner then!

    “Way to go Britain”

i am entitled to my opinion… u have a problem with that ? 😎 if you have… then keep it to yourself……..

    regarding the incident,

in the post 9/11 scenario, when a country receives a tip-off that a boeing 747 is headed inbound and with a bomb threat, what is that country supposed to do?

the flight can’t be given a security clearance while in mid-air… and then comes in the terrorist angle…. what if the plane changes course and heads in another direction…. what are the F-16s/F-15s supposed to do ??

either they have to force the jet outside the country, or find that plane an evacuated airport (which) is very difficult… or do the final step…. blow it….

yes i know it would be a human catastrophe….. but a much larger catastrophe could be avoided on the ground…. a boeing 747 laden with explosives and a mad terrorist are capable of even surpassing the horror of 9/11………

harsh choices have to be made……. 🙁

Well, he simply told him that if he’ll try to enter the Israeli airspace he will be shot down.
Plus, since the pilot isn’t a terrorists, he understood why we are asking him to land in Cyprus. He was told that maybe there are explosives on his plane.

i feel that this is the best way to deal with suspect inbound planes….

if the pilot is a sane guy, he will quietly follow the directives…. but put a terrorist instead…. he will try and fight his way out with the Military jet…. 😀

way to go ISRAEL ! :dev2:

    @ CRAZIMAINER…….

since many people in the historic forum are interested in the “camera forum”,

why dont you conduct a poll in the historic forum and show the results to the webmaster ….

the Webmaster of this forum is very lenient….. he has even allowed stupid and totally non-sensical threads to go on in the general discussion forum….

also if he still doesn’t concede to the demand of a separate forum, then atleast you could ask him to make a thread sticky(camera thread), wherein you all can post all the photos you’ll want……..

The US has acknowledged to stopping Taiwan’s program first in the 1970s and then again 1980s.(1) India and Pakistan got their bombs in 1998.

    ———————————————————–
    Notes:
    (1) http://www.bullatomsci.org/issues/1998/jf98/jf98albright.html
“Taiwan today has no nuclear weapons and seems to have no plans to develop them-but only because the United States and the International Atomic Energy Agency (iaea) pushed Taiwan hard, particularly in the mid-1970s. Fortunately, Taiwan did not dig in its heels.”

“When Taiwan did not abandon its nuclear ambitions altogether, another effort was stopped in the late 1980s. “

i was referring to the ” taiwan could build them tomorrow” statement…. and when a program has been stopped…. you surely can’t build a weapon “tomorrow“…. right ?

also a slight correction…. the first Indian nuclear test was conducted in 1974 and not 1998….

I know this’s not addressed to me, but WRONG! regardless!!!

Truth: The only thing preventing the U.S from attacking N.K., IMHO, is the
chance probability that a third, maybe even a fourth party, might jump in and act as a reliable
backup for him (Kim) at times of need whereas Iraq did not have such luxury.

Backups such as Russian Federation, Korea South, etc., etc., etc…

    :diablo:

i can understand the backups for Iran and maybe even Iraq…. both these countries have significant strategic value…. (read oil)

what does north korea have ???? malnutrition ?!?!

and i seriously dont understand “south korea” coming to the Norths help against the U.S. of A.

i guess that happens only in korean books….. (fiction works)

Taiwan has such an infinitely more developed technical base than India that such a statement is simply laughable. Taiwan doesn’t have nukes because it is under the US umbrella and China’s declared position that if Taiwan goes nuclear, China will go to war.

yes… the statement is laughable…. taiwan already has an American umbrella… no need for India to jump in the mess…..

If it wants to build nukes, like S Korea and Japan, it could build them tomorrow at far greater speed and with far greater sophistication than anything out of India.

could you please explain in detail as to what kinda technology and sophistication Taiwan possesses so as to build a nuclear device from scratch in 24 hours flat…..?

Besides, what is the point, Taiwan isn’t going to win in a nuclear exchange with China, who happens to have thermonukes.

    Crobato….

hasn’t that got something to do with deterrence ????

do you think north korea could win in a nuclear exchange with the U.S.A ??

    no it can’t…..

but still…. Kim jong-il is still ruling North korea… whereas we all know what happened to Saddam……

if we believe the rationale that Prez. George bush put forward in front of the world for a case against Iraq(regarding IRAQI WMDs)….

North korea should have been long gone by now….(North Korea = rogue state, on the ‘axis of evil’ list and actually capable of targetting some part of continental U.S with a nuclear device…. )

only thing preventing the U.S from attacking N.K is their deterrent capability…. and perhaps thats the reason for six-party talks with North korea whereas “shock & awe” for Iraq…. (Iraq did not have the means to target the U.S directly, nor any significant WMD capability as we now know…)

so it doesn’t matter if one side has thermonukes or not….. even having a rudimentary nuclear device entitles you detternce or even abiguity regarding the capability…..
