With Cosford (and the possibility of picking up more hangars there in the future) and Hendon, I think that the present footprint of the museum is fine. They don’t need to be in the business of organising airshows, that isn’t in their remit and nor should it be. The main issue with Cosford, as we have found lately, is that the runway is too short for large aircraft to be delivered by air in the current, risk-averse (post Haddon-Cave) climate.
Cosford is really remote and far from major cities, especially London. Al least the rail station is only 2 Klm away.
Hendon might be close to London, but its pretty much middle of nowhere, less than ideal access, and not a friendly neighborhood (it seemed, may be OK).
Yes, looks very similar!

The significant omission with the BoB hall “spinner” is there is no cutout for the propeller, which will be evident at the outer rim.
Actually, without the prop holes, it will be a “cap”!

This is the item I need to identify. Its only a thought that it might be a butterfly bomb container, but whatever it is it screams air dropped dispensing container, but what and whose is it?
I have manual for SD-2 (B-bomb) dispensers, and that does not look like it.
Different items on display when I looked on Sunday.
No, this is the display *inside* the Spit and Hurri holding pens… forgot what they are called 🙁
While I was in UK I popped into Hendon, I would be remiss if I did not!
I found the display case with these artifacts… (click for bigger image)

With this note!

Yes, if you did not catch it right away, Do-17’s did NOT have MG-17!
I have NEVER, EVER seen a Z-0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 with an MG-17.
The Z-7 and Z-10 are the night fighters which did have, but this one is the bomber!
Also look at the propeller!
Quite straight for a propeller that fell a few thousand feet into Victoria station! (and what of those strange marks??)
Then there is this spinner.

The majority of Luftwaffe aircraft had HOLES in the spinner (and this does not look like the same one either)

and what is with all those indentations? Was this spinner a flowerpot?
I wrote RAM about these, and with the MG get got back and said that is certainly fishy.
The Spinner is also unusual.
Propeller, they are taking the word on that.
Honestly, with the hundreds of thousands of artifact, its easy to make mistakes. I am focusing on just a few aircraft, its about all anyone has time for!
Hi All,
Flying Pencil,
Many thanks for the update as I was sceptical about this whole Do17 project in the first place while not actually realising there were none that survived anywhere, I am now looking forward to when the time comes to seeing the finished product so to speak but like already mentioned it does look very fragile, but a great effort from all the team who have looked after the aircraft since arriving at Cosford.:eagerness:
Ronnie,
Your the man for the job on here surely it would only take a few scans then you to fill in the blanks after research and you have a perfect partner for the job Flying Pencil, your work so far has been outstanding so why not give it a crack I am sure judging by your latest JU-88 offering it will be another masterpiece. :eagerness:Geoff.
Thanks for the vote, Geoff!
With I can quit my job an do this full time… but I will keep plugging!
Fp, you see this?
Yes, I saw this.
Same as the FB page link above.
Published on the 25th of Sept, but it was out before the 18th, when I arrived.
Maybe 14th.
I sent report to RAFM a week ago, but not heard much back.
It has been slow to get replies from them.
FP you can get round that, use the free trial or sign up to
It fools your PC or TV etc into believing it has a different IP and allows you to watch programmes from that country, so Iplayer will work online or should. I use it to allow me to watch US Netflix’s as it has more programmes on it. Well it should if the BEEB haven’t actually blocked it.
Have to try that toddle pip
My God that is a tiny cockpit!
Thanks for sharing!
The late Rob Rudhall went to great lengths to make the programme available for inclusion in the second generation of Battle of Britain film DVDs. Sadly, he didn’t quite live long enough to see them released. I still remember seeing the programme for the first time on video at his house in 2001 and thinking wow, what a great documentary. In my opinion, the fact that it looks so dated now just adds to its appeal.
Ed
Hope it is on the BlueRay version…
Thanks for note!
O-M-G!!!!!!!
Just saw the first 5 min, only 30 years after the fact and there is so much ignorance in those who interviewed! (except the 2 older gents who likely where vets)
At least its good to know modern education is not that much worse! :p
Believe what?
That the seller was acting as an agent and not the real owner.
I have seen this seller before, and I think I purchased an image from him once. While I have no reason to believe he is insincere, there is a lot of fraud going around and people desperate for money, so caveat emptor.
What of it being a “war grave”?
Since the pilot died in the crash and there is a set of laws against disturbing war graves.
(Admitadly I do not know the details, just from what I read about the Cosford Do-17 not being a war grave since all the few was accounted for)
Seller said no reply from owner, but will remove listing if questions persist.
Quick! Send Ian Thirsk (RAFM) right away! Tally ho!
Yes I can see what you’re saying Tony and the flange has been sawn off the actual crankshaft. Maybe one of those that were scrapped about 25 years ago when that AD was in where you had to remove the Hubbard plug and check for internal corrosion. Looking at it again those markings around the outer edge would be the mag timing marks. I believe you are correct.:)
They are Mag Timing marks, was not clear in my OP.
But O-200, that image seems spot on, seen a bunch of them. Could be O-300 as its just a longer O-200 but not as common.
Still no reply from seller.
Interesting.
I talked with him once but not know much of the channgles at RAFM. I assume he was well loved?
