A man without his sword is just a man
A horse with out his armor and knight is just a horse.
A chariot carrying hay instead of bow man is just a chariot.
A “war”bird without weapons is just an airplane.

I thought exactly the same thing when I saw it…..although it is a bit small for six studs!

If it is off a Lycoming or similar this isn’t the propeller-hub is it; it’ll be the end with the starter-motor ring-gear?

Nope, just right for an O-200 or O-235, even bigger like O-300 or O-320.
I am inclined to think American as I have seen this before but cant put finger on it.

Yes on a direct drive engine it’s the end of the crankshaft, the starter motor ring or brush ring etc and prop bolts to it, though not all engines have starter rings, the starter on a lot of continentals is on the back of the engine or on the front case, also the mounts vary from holes to studs.

Starter ring for Lycoming is on a special hub placed between flange and prop.

It looks very much like a modern vehicle wheel hub or drive flange to me, it even has the smaller hole to fix the brake disc on ?

Well, it might unless you have seen this before, then you know. 🙂

A word of warning is in place. Asking any government related agencies – even the fire brigade – to borrow a geiger counter will set all alarm bells off in this fast-changing world. You would not be the first to have his entire collection of instruments seized ‘for the investigation’. I know of a collector near here who had his entire collection of instrument panels impounded and destroyed because some of them were radio-active. One of his instruments had been intercepted in the mail as being radioactive…

Thats the worst, loosing everything because a few where questionable.

For those who missed this, it is being repeated on Wednesday 8th October on BBC2 commencing at 7.00pm

Drat, missed being in UK to see this!

Hope at least some I can see in US (most BBC web video blocked outside of UK)

I wonder if this might be a glider main wheel, although the hub diameter looks quite small. Might just be from a UK made glider, EoN or Slingsby? Many apologies if this is all quite wrong, but I love these ‘Flypast’ what-am-I puzzles.

    Phil

Or maybe a Blimp mainwheel? 😉

    Great links!

Had a chance to see it last month.
It is HUGE, much bigger than I expected.
Quite an interesting beast. Lucky for allies it had major problems and was delayed (Me-210 before renamed 410).

    Great thread!

    Suggestion on scanning:
Scan at highest Optical resolution of scanner, usually 1200 DPI, some can do 2400 DPI (check specs)
Then save at a lower resolution, you have better image quality.
If you have the space, save it maximum resolution (files will get big)

    The file:
Save as HIGHEST quality JPEG, or at least 9/10.
Alternatively is PNG. PNG is a “LossLess” format so it best to preserve integrity of scan; it is almost 15 years old, but only recently became popular.

Excellent bit of detective work, Brian!

I see it sold on eBay for £40.00, someone must have money burning a hole to get that piece of scrap.
If it had a provenance then yes I would say it had more value.

Still, despite hundreds of thousands of aircraft built during WW2, so few left today.

This update sent by a friend – seems in this case all inert and safe, at least it seems that someone with a brain was present and knew what they were looking at. I think 99.9% of peoples collections are most likely the same (inert). Afterall who wants things that can go bang around the house putting their families at risk, what would the point be?

    Thats great!
Police came in with a “trust but verify” attitude, or that they expected a careful law abiding collector.

For a very short space of time, before Hawkinge get their hands on it, the RAF Museum will have the chance to display a representation of the Defiant which probably shot down the Dornier, alongside the wreckage. The Boulton Paul Association’s Defiant FSM is painted in the colours of a Defiant which shot down 2 of the 6 Dorniers downed by Defiants that day. It sits dismantled in a Cosford storage hangar, and the RAF Museum say they don’t want it, which is why it is probably destined for Hawkinge.

Defiant did not shoot it down.

    ID will still be challenge.

Still needs much cleaning. Still a lot of marine growth on it. The worst part is the bottom of wing (top surface) is still thick with growth, prbably because it was on bottom the spray did not wash it as well.

More pertinently what will they be flying? The Hawk Ti is now 40 years old and production stopped some time ago.
There are too few T2s to enable the Reds to have a dozen. May be if McD build the new US Navy trainer they could be persuaded to sponsor the Reds by supplying them too!
    mmitch.

Except that McD went out of business…

    Ask Boeing.

It will be a couple of days before I uploade some of my camera images, for now a couple from my iPhone.
