Latest from site. BBC News channel 9.20am.

Lift. Nature permitting 3 to 4 weeks. Aircraft being prepared removing sand etc. Reports say No Bombs or ammunition on board, Crew confirmed as 2 taken prisoner and 2 bodies recovered shortly after ditching.

Didn’t read this far, but yes, no bombs, no crew, nothing that would cause concern (not counting a old buoy that did cause a scare, and “used” pot both found in wreck)

Supermarine – I have no problem with adding to what we have with axis aircraft. However there are certainly more than a few aircraft that we could return to their ‘original owners’ to benefit their heritage whilst at the same filling gaps with ours . For example the FW-190 two seater and Ki-100 both belong back in their respective countries -both are interesting but the FW-190 is technically more interesting in Germany and the Ki-100 as a sole survivor should be home with a Zero taking it’s place over here.

In terms of the Dornier – it appears that the might not be an intention to restore it – but to stabilize it and display as recovered at Hendon. As for restoration -yes we have the skills but no projects are being carried out in the U.K by museums to the scale of the Fw-200 and Berlin Technical Museums restorations. Its a sad fact but if you look at what’s being done abroad compared to us we are very much on a smaller scale.

The sad truth is, it is ancient history.
You don’t see any of the dozens of pyramids being restored to its marble clad glory, do you?

Despite the 17’s impact on history, it does not enjoy the lime-lite like many others.

On another point, and it might just be me, but what is that object seen at around 4.43 to 4.46 on the top one of the two links (Inside the Bomb Bay) posted by Trolley Aux? It looks awfully like a 50kg bomb laying on its side, but you then lose it under the cross member and the camera does not seem to pan back to it.

(The object in question comes into frame at 4.41. Off to the left, partly obscured by the vertical frame or member that obstructs the object, I almost managed to convince myself that I could see the other end and it seems squared off and I might even convince myself they are the fins if I look any longer!!)

That is NOT a 50 KG bomb.
It would have to at least 3x longer to correct size.

Sorry for my late attendance, much to do for me.

    Cheers!

I am surprised it would have fatigue issues, its not a big pressurized airframe.

Maybe the spar was not robustly designed?

    Good archeology thread this.

The first time is already ID, for comparison is hub from Hamilton Standard prop.
(surprised DH hub is so similar, licensed design?)

Sorry to re-open an old thread, but I found it while searching for information about this photo I found on ebay. This was truly a weird design.

Read a story about Hudson or Anson that took off, and soon after a forgotten wrench jammed the yoke. Pilot bailed over bay, but airplane continued on merry way on gentle decent until it just missed a football game and landed softly in field a little further. Fixed and back in air in no time.

Meanwhile the poor ****** who bailed out was still bobbing about in the bay….

    (picked up 3 days later).

What about that Ju-88, crew bailed at night over France, the 88 made a wwiiiiddddeee circle and made a soft landing in UK, 1940.

It seems that the museum upset the park service by holding too many unauthorised events in the museum. Funnily enough when I tried to visit the museum back in September it was closed for a party!

Actually, it was authorized under the original terms (IIRC).
    Park service changed the terms.

    Wanted piece of pie?

Well that’s all very well. But I joined to fly fighters and I find myself doing squaddie basic training for a Canadian Infantry Company. 😡

How do I get to Cranwell?

    Moggy

I think the recruiter pointed you in the wrong direction.

    Could be worse.
    Could be speaking German. 😀
