Thanks guys!
Mystery solved, will pass the link and photos to my friend. He better have to learn how to distinguish between a Tempest and a Spit! š

Christer Landberg
I noticed a rather unusually-marked Tempest in amongst those pictures.
Does anyone know why?
DazDaMan,
It looks like the Tempest Mk. VI prototype HM595, which had earlier served as the Mk V prototype. It’s still carries the long-barrelled 20 mm Mk. II Hispano cannons. Now also fitted with the wing root air intakes.
But the photo is reversed, note the pitot tube among other things. Was it because of censorship the markings is wiped out?

Thanks for the replies concerning the Tempests. My best(?) guess is that they are MW404 and MW758.
But when Ian Wilkinson was back early yesterday morning to see if he could get any further information on the Tempests, the fuselages and wings have been removed!! See attached photos for what remains, very little. Let us hope they have gone for restoration or storage and not scrapping!!
If the Tempests are scrapped, God forbid, they could have given one each to me and DaveR…..

Tempest Mk. II
Not old photos, but recently taken by Ian Wilkinson. The location is “in the yard of a small fabrication company at the former RAF Hemswell airbase. This is located north of Lincoln just to the west of the A15 road to Scunthorpe (both in Lincolnshire). The airfield is north of RAF Scampton.”
Posted them on my website, but the mystery is the identity of the Tempest. Is it Tempest Two Ltd’s MW401? The serial painted on the wing says HA591(?), but that’s Nelson Ezell’s Tempest .
Any clues or good guesses?

Dave,
If you are interested in the history of Week’s Tempest V, check out my website! Or this link to it’s “own” page: Week’s SA-I (EJ693)
There were a number of pilots flying EJ693, Harvey Sweetman is still with us!

Hi James,
Thanks for the reply!
I know there are a few Tempest cockpit sections around, and I hoped this was one of them but…. The search for photos of them continues š

Not made by me, but my friend Sivert Bjork (Karlskoga, Sweden). His 1/4-scale Hawker Tempest Mk. V painted as Clostermann’s Le Grand Charles. Awesome model!

Quiz solved!
Thanks for the replies! Yes, this was a more tricky one, but..
First, Graham was later told that the only part belonging to a Tempest is the one marked “TEMP V”. The other part belongs to a Messerschmitt (109?) š
But the nearest IS the emergency hand pump as David suggests. Found a drawing and it matches perfectly!! Part L in the drawing below.
Once again, thanks for the help to identify the part!
Cheers,
Christer Landberg

Well, not full-size but Pierre Clostermann’s Le Grand Charles in 1/4-scale. Built and flown by Sivert Bjork in Sweden.

More pictures to be admired can be found here !!
Cheers!
Christer
Thanks for the replys so far.
Yes, I agree with all of you. The cockpit night lights were my first guess too when Graham asked me. But why no glass or wires attached? Shouldn’t it be that after a crash?
Take Care!

Compare the ebay-canopy with this, for sure, Tempest canopy (Hendons NV778). Quite a difference…

Neilly,
The 1/4-scale Tempest built by Sivert Bjork is gonna be painted as Clostermann“s JF-E (one of them..) as soon as its warm enough in his garage.
I think 97% of all Tempest models I have seen are JF-Es, a few are JF-Zs and SA-Ns. The only model I have seen painted as R-B is built by Bob Partington, UK. From a Ron Daniels 1/11-scale kit.
My next Tempest, in 1/6th scale, will be painted as R-B with the i/d stripes. Nice drawings in +4 Publication“s book, isn“t it Neilly?
/Christer
Partington“s R-B:

Neilly,
You were looking for “special” Tempests, then I can recommend another book: “Typhoon and Tempest Aces of World War 2” by Chris Thomas. Very nice colour plates and photos, just some tips:
R-B (JN751): Wg Cdr Roland Beamont“s Tempest with i/d or D-Day stripes. (Bee is Mr. Tempest)
JJ-F (EJ762): Flt Lt Fairbanks, Tempest Top Scorer.
JF-Z (JN862): Flt Lt Van Lierde, destroyed 44 V1s. On June 23 1944 he destroyed five Divers!
SA-A (NV969): Sqn Ldr Schrader: 9 and 2 shared in Tempests.
So you donĀ“t have to make another Clostermann JF-E…
My latest Tempest is painted as SD-F (EJ600), the Tempest in which Sqn Ldr Joe Berry was killed. Berry was the “Top V1 killer”, 60 V1s!! Unfortunately there is no known photo of this aircraft.
The next Tempest model (1/6-scale) will definitely be painted as Beamont“s R-B.

PS. Snapper: Yesterday I got my copy of “Runways to victory”, its a brick! Excellent book, very high quality and lot of photos. DS
Hi Neilly,
Have you seen the photos at my website? For example Walkarounds > NV778. I have all of the photos in larger sizes if you need.
4+ Publications Tempest book is also recommended. The best Tempest book when you are looking for pics of details.
Btw, your Mosquito looks fantastic!
Take Care!
