Its just silly reporting, I think the reporter may have been referring to the fact that India has “dominance” with regards to having started development of its own medium range SAM
Well, this may be a benefit, although I thought Pakistan – US and India – US relations were totally seperate from each other….
India riled by US-Pakistan ties
By Charles Haviland
BBC, Delhi
Powell (l) told Pakistan the news during his recent regional tour
India has expressed disappointment at a decision by the United States to upgrade its relations with India’s neighbour and rival, Pakistan, without informing India in advance.
A statement from the Foreign Ministry in Delhi said Washington’s designation of Pakistan as a major non-Nato ally would have “significant implications for India/US relations”.
These are strong words from India, clearly rattled at Washington’s decision to bestow this new status on Pakistan.
The reaction is a sign of the ever sensitive relations the two sub-continental rivals have with each other and with the world’s only super power.
The new status will put Pakistan in the company of such key American allies as Israel, Japan and Jordan.
It will give Islamabad access to US-owned military stockpiles on its territory and privileged rights to US military training.
Frosty
The announcement was hardly a surprise – America and Pakistan have enjoyed special ties since the 1950s – but the timing shocked India.
The news came from the US Secretary of State, Colin Powell, while visiting Islamabad on Thursday. Just a day earlier, he had left India.
While here, Mr Powell said Indian/American ties, including military ones, were perhaps better than ever before.
But Saturday’s frosty statement said he had not shared with Delhi this new decision on Pakistan.
It comes as India prepares for general elections in a month’s time.
The governing Bharatiya Janata Party is seeking to play up a feel good factor in the country, including India’s own aspirations to super power status.
But Delhi took two days to give this response – a day after the opposition Congress party called the decision on Pakistan “a public repudiation of India”.
I see the usual suspects are trying to change the subject,
should we concentrate on trying to find out what, if any, major benefits will Pakistan recive for being a “Major non-NATO Ally”!?
Can EVERYONE (Indian, Pakistani and Chinese) take the flame somewhere else….
Right, now wheres that shopping list…..

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) – The United States will designate Pakistan a major non-NATO ally, a step that will make it easier for Pakistan to buy U.S. military equipment, Secretary of State Colin Powell said Thursday.
Pakistan has for years run into difficulties in obtaining advanced weaponry and aircraft for its military from the United States because of Washington’s concerns about its nuclear arms programs.
“We’ll designate Pakistan as a major non-NATO ally for purposes of our future military-to-military relations,” Powell told a news conference in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
Powell arrived in Pakistan Wednesday for talks that will cover a nuclear proliferation scandal, the hunt for Osama bin Laden and efforts to achieve peace with India.
Pakistan has become a crucial U.S. ally in the war on terror launched in the wake of the September 11 attacks on the United States.
The United States imposed sanctions on Pakistan after it conducted nuclear tests in 1998 but most were lifted after the September 11 attacks.
Pakistani forces are hunting Osama bin Laden militants of his al Qaeda network in Pakistan’s wild tribal lands on the Afghan border while U.S. forces mount a sweep on the Afghan side.
Islamabad has held talks in recent month on arms purchases from the United States, although officials have denied local media reports that Washington had offered a $9 billion arms package.
One report said Pakistan’s bid to buy 40 F-16 fighter planes and upgrade its existing fleet was on the agenda of a Washington meeting late last year.
Pakistan, which has a long-running rivalry with neighboring nuclear power India, has long sought these aircraft and the last time the issue was discussed was when Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf met President Bush at Camp David last June. Bush refused the sale at the time.
Washington refused to deliver 28 F-16s in the 1990s because of concerns about Pakistan’s nuclear program. The planes had been paid for and it took eight years for the money to be refunded.
