I should add that many of these parts may have a Dutch connection, your CF-104 made me realise that Dutch NF-5s were built in Canada.

What I’m looking for right now is along the lines of:

    • What is it? (for some of these that may seem obvious but there might be more to the instrument than meets the eye, such as the fact that no.5 looks like an artificial horizon but the plate says ‘automatic pilot’).
    • What aircraft type(s) was it used on?
    • Or if the type is unknown or could be many, at least: how old is it?

With this I can at least offer more information to our students, and one or two (hopefully more) instruments might prove more useful to us than they are now.

Keith, I’ll send you a PM (today or tomorrow).

    Runway 06, thanks!

The CF-104 or for that matter NF-5 options are out for number 2. I checked some photos on internet and they use a drum and single pointer type.

    Anyone?

Indeed a good explanation. I’m also often irritated that people manage to post loads of text without bothering to check up on the facts. Another (vaguely related) issue in this vein is passenger operations with DC-3s. What is overlooked is that there is an option to apply for an exemption from the EASA rules in this respect, enabling DC-3 pax ops. Nobody in the UK has applied for such an exemption, so clearly the operator has made this decision, not the CAA.

In The Netherlands the Dutch Dakota Association is still flying passengers on their two DC-3s, under the same EASA regulations, with an exemption.

I’m not saying that this is a seamless process but it is possible and not ‘banned by the CAA’.

    Tom Reilly’s place at Kissimmee

Correct, now sadly closed. I wonder what happened to some of the planes that were there. This Corsair could be flying by now I reckon (the photo was taken in 2002).

This was in February 2002 at Kissimee, Florida. At Tom Reilly’s place as Yak 11 Fan correctly stated. RMAllnut states that it is with Vought Heritage in Dallas, is that this one: F4U-X restoration?
This is also a possibility: http://www.warbirdregistry.org/corsairregistry/fg1-76628.html

Impressive, but it doesn’t appear to be complete (I’m missing some ZAxxx airframes). Hats off to the guy who did this though!

Perhaps it’s worth mentioning here that the website for Melvyn’s last book is still up: https://www.melvynhiscock.com/

Anyone wishing to get in touch with his family, there is a good chance that the contact page still works.

    Lancaster NN775 display at Overloon

See here for a higher resolution version: https://flic.kr/p/2qotEcc

It is a powerful way to display these remains. There is an information sign next to the wreckage and you can use an app on your phone to get an AR view of how the aircraft looked before its demise. That includes details about its final flight as well IIRC.

Lysander uses internally sprung wheels, same as the Gloster Gladiator, so not these ones I would think. See here: https://www.imeche.org/news/news-article/dowty-internally-sprung-undercโ€ฆ
