Great to see those Beaufighter manuals, many unique, especially the Australian ones. Has anyone got an Australian contact who could search for the Bristol Hercules manuals there. All comments welcome

I am Melbourne based and can assist in looking for manuals locally if you require?

    regards

Thanks everyone, @Tonk, at this stage, because of their likely significant volumes even only as display engines, I had specifically intended to exclude both the Gipsy Major and the Gipsy Queen series of engines from this first list, as that can lead you into post war versions like Gipsy Major Mk 10s, Queen 30’s and 70’s.

Also the number of those engines in airframes (static and flying) would increase the list even further, – but I am happy to add those models in later once we have focused on the “pre-war” civil engines.

While the Major itself was a pre-war civil engine, its production exploded during WW2, while I will need to check my manuals but I understood that the Queen’s were military versions of the Gipsy Six first associated with wartime types like the Dominie and Proctor?

I will take on board all the contributions above and publish a revision

Thanks Mothminor,  the engine in your photo at Midland Air Museum in 2022 looks a lot like a normally inverted Blackburn Cirrus Major that has been mounted as if its an earlier Upright ADC Cirrus, but the fact that the Crankcase “Cirrus” embossed brand is upside down is a strong clue to its true identity. – I will of course still add it to the list.

The Cockpit of KB941 seemingly got scrapped in Canada along with most of the rest of it?

Its wing centre-section was acquired by Charles Church to help restore KB976 after it suffered a hangar collapse and is now in Kermit Weeks posession.

Or are you referring to the Cockpit of KB994 that was also acquired by Charles Church from Canada about the same time and for the same purpose?

Although its signage describes it as a Cirrus I, this is not an ADC Cirrus engine but seemingly either a late model Cirrus Hermes (inverted engine) or even a Blackburn Cirrus Major/Minor (inverted engine).

It has massive V shaped bracing moulded into the crankcase “below” the engine mount blocks, the carb/air intake is on the RHS of the inverted engine and the starter motor is mounted vertically at RHS rear, features that should make it easily identified?

I will try to identify it against my manuals, it seems to be missing its reduction gear cover at the front?

I have checked my manuals, its NOT a Blackburn Cirrus Major

It IS a Blackburn Cirrus Minor

Have just been trawling through some of my photos and have found this one taken at the Yorkshire Air Museum, Elvington in 2019 –

    ATTACHMENTS

I had someone else tell me they had seen a Cirrus engine at Elvington but I couldn’t find any reference to it online or within the museum’s website.

Also the KZ IX Ellehammer replica in the Danmarks Flymuseum at Stauning is listed as having a Cirrus Hermes engine –

    https://www.flymuseum.dk/our-planes?id=189:kz-ix-ellehammer&catid=34

    Better photo here –

    https://www.oy-reg.dk/billeder/l1277.jpg

Yes thats certainly an ADC Cirrus engine of some sort

I am not sure its a Cirrus Hermes as the sump is a symmetrical V shape, consistent with the original ADC Cirrus I, II and III, where as the Hermes has a more rectangular sump?

The Heads are difficult to see even when the image is zoomed in, but to my eye they seem to be Cirrrus III heads, so again either a late Cirrus II with Cirrus III heads, or a Cirrus III?

    Thanks

The Old Rhineback Museum in New York lists a 1925 / 90HP “Cirrus Minor” on its engine display page on its website.

It seems to have ADC style “CIRRUS” embossing on the Crankcase
(but not clear enough in the image to read and confirm that)
It seems to have Cirrus III style heads
Hence I suspect its an ADC built Cirrus III engine and have listed it at such but the c/n is unknown and the data plate identity yet to be confirmed?
