The Kittyhawk fuselage is P40E A29-28, at the time owned by Jack McDonald, and formerly a cockpit section on display for many years at Pearce Dunn’s Warbirds Museum at Mildura, (which at its peak held such treasures as Ralph Cusack’s Beaufort, Murray Griffith’s Kingsfisher, and the RAAF Museum’s Mosquito)

The P40E is now owned by the RAAF Museum, with wings being built at Murray Griffith’s facility at Wangaratta in trade for the A20 airframes.

The Hawker ‘biplane” fuselage behind is Jack McDonalds airworthy Hawker Demon Restoration, still owned by Jack and currently on display at Caboolture. (and seen in James & Johns excellent adventure)

Jack was involved in the static restoration of the Demon for the RAAF Museum, and manufactured many duplicate parts for his own project in the process.

The photo is taken in the mid 1980’s at Monty Armstrongs hangar 91? at Essendon Airport which housed Air-repair and the Australian Aerospace Museum, which held Monty’s Mark V Beaufort, and Ian Whitney’s Mark V Spitfire.

It looks like it might be the piece of the “Hubble” telescope they forgot to bolt on, that because it was missing, made the Hubble take those fuzzy pictures, – but I could be wrong, and maybe then it could just be a bombsight?

But I would have to agree with James,
that calling it a bombsight is the sort of thing someone would say who doesnt know what it is

where as I am calling it part of “Hubble” because I am absolutely sure I have no idea what it is – smiles

    Mark P

(incidently, I went to a Australian Government Emergency Complex in Victoria and found a piece of “SkyLab” mounted in the garden as a display, so this piece might turn out to be part of Skylab rather than Hubble – smiles)

Keep googling Frank! I used “618 squadron highball” and got the BB post (from May 2005) on page 2 of the hits. Also found some images of 618 squadron’s machines derelict in Australia from the Webshots album of a certain Australian forumite – Setter

    OUR FUNDRAISING:

We have raised and held for over 10 months an initial fund of over $10,000 AUD, however competition from other bidders and delays in our own project have caused us to restructure our proposal without increasing the total price.

We are therefore urgently fundraising to complete our 1st instalment of the non-refundable holding deposit, and are trying to raise a further $15,000 AUD by the end of September, we already hold more than that in our existing fundraising, we are seeking significant cash/cheque and EFT donations in the order of $100 to $500 to complete this fundraising by the target date to avoid our option expiring. (30 donors of $500 meets our current target!)

If we do not raise this money by the end of September and transfer it to the UK we will loose our option to buy and the aircraft will return for sale to others already bidding.

If we do not gain sufficient support in this fundraising drive to be confidently able to proceed to full purchase we will not proceed and return all moneys to the donors.

If we do proceed we will as a registered charitable institution issue receipts to all donors and continue with ongoing fundraising towards our second instalment and 12 month progressive payments.

Future fundraising will open up to lower donations below $50, and pledge payments based on $1/day arrangements.

We would welcome anyone collecting monies on our behalf and ask that they use the attached form to record the names, addresses and details of donation amount and forward these records and payment to us urgently by any means available.

The simplest method of lodging a donation to us, is to make an over the counter or online EFT transfer direct into our Bank Account.

Over the counter bank deposits of cash, cheque or money order is available to any person by simply entering any Westpac branch and completing and lodging a standard manual deposit slip, please remember to identify any donations with your name and provide an email or postal copy of your records of transaction so we can return unspent monies, or provide a tax certified receipt of donation!

Westpac Branches are normally open until 4.30 – 5pm weekdays and many are open until 12 midday on Saturday, please take the opportunity to make a donation this coming Saturday morning 24th of September before we loose this wonderful opportunity.

Please call or email if you propose an alternative payment method such as Paypal?

    Dave,

the RAF received @ 7 of the first “Australian” built Beauforts, although these were in fact Australian assembled Bristol built, but they did have the Australian pratt/whitney engines fitted in place of Taurus engines so I suspect it was in this area that problems arose in the early production.

    Mark12,

We are focusing on the big bit the cockpit bolts onto first (the rest) before we focus on the front end, and there are a number of options being considered, but I can confirm we have been investigating a long nose cockpit rumoured to still exist in Australia, we are yet to confirm that rumour.

    Dave,

I dont have the sqn numbers near by but there were:

Transport Sqn moved from Burma to Australia operating C-47’s

Anti Shipping Sqn operating modified Mosquitos with a version of the dambusting bomb for use of ships.

these both in preparation for the Tiger Force? against Japan.

perhaps a remanent of an RAF Sqn also came down with Buffallo’s from Malaysia/Signapore but I dont think they remained operational as an RAF Sqn with the A/c transfering to the RAAF?

Then there were the FAA Sqns from the Royal Navy.
