Think the Burma F-27 was brand-new in 1971

The police pic with barbed wire was in JWRTaylor’s History of Aviation weekly but the formal portrait was never published before

The excellence of modern paints must be a big problem, but matt finishes are an option via matting additives, aren’t they?

If you zoom in on the Ford Anglia you see very basic tail lights which suggests an early model (strangely, seems to be LH drive)

That square shape unitary body Ford was in production from 1953 under various names Prefect/Anglia? I thought TCA moved over to Centre when T3 opened like all the long-haulers 13Nov61 (so their DC-8s were seen Northside?). But 1959 could be right as photos are usually later than one thinks!

Pity I didn’t have colour in the camera. Sarah! 🙂 I did use colour from the Air-India earth mound one session but they weren’t using 05 that day.

In the pprune ATC forum recently a guy mentioned a DC-8-63 gusty landing on 23 when a wind change dropped the aircraft hard on the threshold shoving one main gear into the wing structure, requiring temporary repairs, and as he recalled a gear down ferry back to Europe….did you ever hear of that?

Thanks, canadair……Hats off to them if they’re making it from wood…..fibreglass and foam would be quicker (but heresy)….also they need to do a little wind-tunnel work to figure why the elevator had no effect….maybe lower the taiplane position?

    That would be me

The reason I left the note about the Napier Heston Racer as a future post was that while I am in contact with the prospective builder, it is still at the planning and drawing phase.
The builder has currently collected all of the required wood, and has the vast majority of the drawings now completed, but has yet to start cutting wood.
They have collected a great deal of the required parts, and most importantly also have on hand a RR Griffon engine, in place of the next to impossible to source Napier Sabre Engine.
I would think that based on the progress to date and determination of the builder, we will soon see a “Griffon” Heston Racer coming together.

RE the DH71 Replica mentioned above, the USA replica was built and flown by Mike Maniatis in Upstate New York. Mike still owns the aircraft, but chooses not to currently fly it as it is stored on a short and rather unsuitable field.
Mike is very complimentary of the flight characteristics of the aircraft, and from the photos I have seen the workmanship is of a very high quality.
Regards the comments of the replica not “built as per the original” I do not know enough details of the original DH racer to confirm how accurate it might be, but I know that Mike is very knowledgeable of DH history in general, and certainly carried out thorough research prior to building the aircraft.
I will say that it is very hard to determine just what “original” was, as details of the Golden Age racers are hard to pin down.

Regardless, my hat is off to any builder who has the skill and determination to complete and fly any Golden Age racer replica.

Hallo Peter…Always enjoy your Schiphol pics….Yes ,the through-plane 707 NW/PanAm route was Minneapolis-Detroit-Boston-London-Amsterdam….I’ve got a shot of an NW 707 at Schiphol (somewhere!)http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1971/1971%20-%200200.html?search=pan american northwest heathrow

I think the Delta and Northwest flights were through-plane services so the passengers could stay on the aircraft while Delta or Northwest crews took over from the Pan Am crews (at New York and Detroit respectively) for the domestic sector. This shot of the NorthWest 707 landing runway 05 at LHR was in the thread a few months ago . The Delta DC-8s used were ex-Pan Am model 30s with JT-4 non-fan engines….quite smoky

Picked up on a thread on pprune about Pan Am interchange flights with Delta and Northwest around 1970…it brought Pan Am liveried DC-8s back to LHR briefly ….the Delta 747s came around 1973 I think

I think the C-47 introduced more castings and forgings for ease of production and I think the undercarriage was strengthened. Your 737 query is answered elsewhere in this thread….I think Boeing was able to spend more time and money than usual on refining the production process (panel sizes and join positions etc) between the Classic and NG because they could count on such a long production run

In the course of its production history, did anything else than the type of power plant, the position and type of doors and the floor structure change on the DC-3?

How much does the latest version of the B737 have in common with the original 737-100?

Is it really the same aircraft and can you count all as being “Boeing 737’s”…?
