Well when I put the Iberia F-28s on airliners.net aboutsix years ago I was amazed they didn’t have them already…I think they crashed 2 out of 3…yes the F-28 is a pretty plane

737 project status December 1964
One thing I hadn’t realized until looking at the 737 history for one of VeeOnes photothreads was that the original 737 proposal was even smaller (85tourist seats, 75 ft span, 85ft length) than the 737 -100 version of the Lufthansa launch order (Feb65)…another Flight account has a proposed span of 84ft and length of 81ft10inches

This was at the 1975 Paris Air Show, the year before services began in the traditional Air France colours (pre-production F-WTSB)
And this was the second visit of Concorde to Heathrow 1July 1972 (World Tour)…it had visited briefly in 1970 after Farnborough apparently ( UK prototype G-BSST)
LHR Go-arounds
I’m thinking back to my spotting/aircraft photography dats 59s.60s/70s when a go-around seemed rare….roughly one-a-day seems a bit shocking to me, though I suppose it’s good training. An extra runway at each of the three London airports would surely make things a bit less stressed
Rolls Royce Tay re-engined UPS 727 (QF)
As I said before, the crowning irony in the Tridentvs727 saga….couple of Airliners.net pics as nobody on Key has posted one (yet?) Note the extensive centre duct enlargement on this modification
They were seen in the UK occasionally

LHR Go-arounds
Gonzo….how does that compare with other major airfields and what do the ATC/Airline crews think about it?

Heathrow safety
Well the only serious ones were the Mallard in 1949 and the BEA Viking in 1950….I would be interested in the present-day frequency of Tower Commanded go-arounds caused by aircraft still on the runway…I read a figure in the press a couple of years ago which surprised me…I thought it a mistake when Cameron axed the 3rd runway at LHR…it seems to me additional runways at all the London civil airfields would increase safety and reduce stress….but then I don’t live in the area anymore:)
727 stuff
Note that Iraq and Kuwait had Tridents before the 727 (cue unsmilikon?)..but i have to confess ! always considered the 727 a superior aircraft…what a traitor I am!
Here’s one of Alan Scholefield’s shots of a Sabena 727 at Ringway 1970, think they got them in 1964ish

And heres the video of Ed Daly’s World Airways 727 flight out of Da Nang. with reportedly over 300 souls on board…quality may be poor

Also check out D B Cooper 727
After checking on airliners.net I think yours is a regular 727 fitted with sound proofing…. the Valsan modified ‘Super 27’ had different side (fatter) mounted engines JT8D-217s but the centre engine was original plus sound deadening…the Tay powered -100 re-engine job for UPS required a new shaped duct to the centre engine
Longshot. I know very little about the mods ? I always assume the ‘extra’ parts at the rear of the engines are sound reducing kits ??
A photo of the rear of this one at St Maarten last week, they seem to be regular there, have lots more 727 photos to follow in a thread about my day at Opa Locka …… coming very soon …… 🙂
