    DC-3s and A-B book

Unfortunately its sold out , I believe, John.Arthur Pearcy’s Airlife book on lend-lease has quite a bit on the ex-civilian DC-2/Dc-3s with the RAF and includes a similar photo to the one you have of VIP DC-3 code ‘P’ which it says is MA925 (credited to a ‘D’ surname via JDR Rawlings) ex American Airlines and Pan Am Africa. Hope I’m not dragging the thread too far to the transport side 🙂

The Air-Britain DC-2/DC-3 book indicates AX755 with 267sqdn in Egypt, Jul41 after assembly in Capetown (sea-shipment, presumably), then with 31sqdn in India.
It lists a total of 21 DC-2s and 10 DC-3s ex-civilian…mostly with Pan Am Africa for a while before transfer to India…I’m not sure now which Pan Am division flew them across the South Atlantic

ex civilian DC-2s and DC-3s with RAF in India

Pan Am Ferries flew DC-2s and DC-3s purchased/requisitioned from US airlines out to Africa and the Far East via Natal, Brazil see LIFE link
    http://images.google.com/images?q=brazilian+bases&q=source%3Alife

The attached sample shows 2 variants of the DC-2, the nearest US.9 with narrow fin, RH pax door and nose landing lights and the other with wide fin, LH pax door and wing landing lights (as used by American and Delta, I believe)….was the latter called the DC2K with the RAF?

    Swordfish Photo

Thanks wieesso …It must be a fairly well known photo…reportedly salvaged by Vichy forces after ditching during Operation Menace , the unsuccessful attempt by the British and De Gaulle’s Free French to prise Dakar and Senegal from the Vichy Government in September 1940

    Life archive RAF photos

Searching ‘RAF’ in the Google Life archive brings up the colour Spitfire photo, part of a set called ‘Daylight fighter Sweep’ by William Vandivert….delving further the search leads to an interesting set ‘Singapor’ (yes, spelt wrongly rather usefully) by Carl Mydans in 1941….Brewster Buffaloes, Blenheims, P&W powered Australian Hudsons…..http://images.google.com/images?q=RAF&q=source%3Alife

The dusk shot of the Lysander landing with ‘headlights’ on is very imaginative

    Fairey,Hayes, Heathrow, Heston, Hanworth

I’m open to correction but I think the main Fairey production was at Hayes with a Firefly line also at Hanworth….Heathrow was the test airfield with a single hangar not used for production, from which Fairey’s were evicted to Heston as the civil Heathrow construction ramped up . I’m not sure how much actual airframe production took place at Fairey Heston initially,… post war there were Hydraulic and Nuclear Fairey Divisions there. ( Mustn’t forget Fairey at Manchester Ringway of course)

    RN, Fairey, Heathrow , Heston

Quoting from an early version of a Heston History which I think was published by the Chiltern Aviation Society about 25 years ago…..In May 1945 an RN Comms Squadron, No701 (aka Admiralty Flight) was formed at Heston….this replaced 781 formerly based at Heathrow …it (701) provided Admiralty comms and flying practice for desk bound officers in the London area. Aircraft recorded with the squadron (701) were Dominie HG708,Oxford PH195,Expeditor FT984, Tiger Moth BB723,Anson NK836, Harvard EZ424, BEECH TRAVELLER FT467, SeafireXV SR485…..
In the post war views of Heston in the Flight Global online archive you can see a Dominie and Stinson Reliant(presumably RN?) mixed in with the Fireflies and Spearfish prototype. There was a big display on 2Oct 1945 which featured a lot of prototype Naval Aircraft (see Pathe News online and RAF Museum Navigator archives)

Is that the last Rolls Royce powered 707 in the world? The British Airways one at Cosford was chopped up! Well done Lufthansa!
