An urban myth which, along with a couple of others, keeps getting perpetuated, a Lightning (EE) has never shot down another aircraft friendly or otherwise, the Harrier story can be found here http://bit.ly/2HJtZq3 #13. The 6 harrier kill markings were, IIRC, from DACT (dissimilar air combat training). The owner Hugh Trevor can give you the story.
The other side and the port side. Port side view was taken at Muharraq on the journey to the UK so the ‘M’ was either put on at Muharraq or at another staging post or on it’s arrival at Biggin
Not necessarily pre 1950’s, the flaps and slats in the Panavia Tornado are rotating mechanical control runs with a similar arrangement, hydraulically driven by a central FSDU (flap slat drive unit).
Still in circuit at Coningsby, right now, viewed from my bedroom window.
Everything you need to know can be found in the database here http://www.lightnings.info

I’ve had a quick look through Stewart Scott’s English Electric Lightning Vol.1 but can’t seem to find any reference to the airbrakes on the P.1A, not saying there isn’t one though as there’s a lot of reading in it.
Have you tried contacting the BAE Systems Heritage Centre at Warton, they are very amenable.
Have a look at some of the photos that they have allowed us to use in our albums especially of WG760 on assembly just before first flight, doesn’t appear to be any ‘Dive Brakes visible’ – https://picasaweb.google.com/107645514498566597638/WG760?noredirect=1#

Of course living here I have no problem but still 3/4 of a mile walk to the BBMF ;). With reference to parking on local land with support of the landowners, 99% of it is farm land and driving around the perimeter road regularly, as I do the fields currently have all got crops in so don’t think any farmer would like those driven on. As regular visitors will know parking is severely restricted along Dogdyke and fills up very quickly and then of course you get the idiots who will park on the double yellow lines and restrict the flow of traffic, in the village there is one small carpark – 2 hours free parking, but after that you pay. On Fighter Control forum – Coningsby thread this subject has been dealt with at some length and worth a read.
For anybody that is going to be visiting Coningsby whilst the CWH Lancaster is present you should make note of the following which has just been put out by the local council.
The dates mentioned are the projected ones and are subject to change as per the note that says ‘Restrictions to be implemented as & when required during this period’
Hope this is of some use to those planning to visit so that you don’t get a surprise when you turn up and find that you can’t park next to the airfield, or anywhere within 1/2 a mile for that matter by the looks of it.
