Since we are comparing the U214 ,AgostaB90,Scorpene,Turquoise, how would the swedish subs compare with the French and German boats? Australia recently is refitting its new Sswedish Collins class submarines with an American weapons suite and i actually do like the Gotland class swedish sub as well. Any news on the Dutch Designed Morray submarines?
P.S, lets keep the discussion confined to Pakistan , NOT india and their old early 80’s creaky submarines. Thanx

Taiwan rejects offer of four second-hand Indian subs
Taiwan has turned down a proposed deal to buy four used submarines from a third country amid concerns that Washington’s offer to sell Taipei eight diesel submarines may be aborted, a report said Monday.
A former US congressman tried to broker the deal during his visit to Taiwan early this month, a trip the Pentagon “fully understood,” the United Daily News quoted an unnamed military source as saying. The paper did not identify the former congressman.
It said the four diesel-powered vessels are believed to be the old German-built 209-class submarines which had been serving the Indian navy for up to 14 years.
The paper said the Indian navy is claiming to be “building” two nuclear-powered submarines.
The US broker felt the deal would allow Taiwan’s navy to boost its submarine fleet in two years at a relatively low cost, the paper said, without specifying the price.
However the deal was rejected by Taiwan military authorities despite US guarantees of after-sales maintenance and spare parts.
The paper said the proposed deal carried a “political message” that Washington’s offer to sell Taipei eight conventional submarines may be aborted. However it may also reflect Washington’s growing desire that Taiwan play a greater role in checking the expansion of the Chinese navy.
US President George W. Bush in April approved the sale of eight diesel-electric submarines as part of Washington’s most comprehensive arms package to Taipei since 1992.
But the US has not built conventional submarines for more than 40 years and designing an entirely new one would be prohibitively expensive. Therefore, the most likely solution would involve foreign participation.
Military sources here have said Taiwan’s navy favors German 212-class or Dutch-designed Moray submarines.
But both countries have said they would not get involved in arms sales to the island, which Beijing regards as part of its territory to be unified with the mainland by force, if necessary.
Taiwan’s navy currently operates a fleet of four submarines including two Dutch-built Sword Dragon submarines and two aging US vessels.
Pakistan is interested in “Another” type of Sub. The Agosta B90 project will continue and we will see a total of 6 boats built in Karachi. The Other type of sub could either be the Turquoise class or the “Substantialy larger ” sub being built in the Spanish shipyards currently, it is twice the size of a Scorpene and far more advanced. HDW shipyards is partly owned by the U.S so im not in favour of the U214. I’d like to see the Turquoise inducted into the PAK navy. I’d be very surprised if india goes for the Scorpene submarines under their Turbanator Prime minister. and if they do, we probably wont see the first scorpene rolling out before 2010. The U209’s are crap and the kilo is a 25 year old design. Even if they do fire Klubs , its no biggie because the kilos are always being repaired and its going to be obsolete soon, plus the indians have had Major problems with it
What Pakistan wants is a Sub in the class of theAussi Collins, Brazils Tupi or the Spainish S-80. The indiaqis can keep deciding which sub to buy for another 5 or 6 years, suits Pakistan just fine : )
Actually , im doubtfull that india is going to buy the Scorpenes now. Russia is pressuring it to buy the Amur class instead. Pakistan should go for the Turquoise Class subs by DCN as they are far more advanced than either the Agosta or the Scorpene. The U214 isnt all that expensive and im sure the PAK NAVY can afford it. But the question is ….how reliable is germany going to be in view of the EU export regulations? The embargo against CHINA is going to be lifted this year and hopefully we might see the U214 being sold to the Chinese Navy.
Afghanistan will always be Pakistan’s Backyard. The ISI needs to reactivate its contacts and control Afghanistan after the US leaves afghanistan. The old useless Afghan Junk should be returned , but Afghanistan has to pay storage charges for the years from 1983 to 2005. Only fair .
I dont understand why Pakistan would even keep Afghan Junk for so long. I seriously doubt whether it still has these so called “aircraft”. Might have been sold off for scrap metal or sent to Langley as war trophies. For more info on the Afghan war bounties ..read “Charlie Wilson’s war” by george crile.
Brian,
Perhaps the problem was the fact that the Gripen uses so many US components which are/were restricted for sale to Pakistan.
Well, that argument would be valid 6 years ago.Pakistan today is free from any US sanctions, It is a Major Non Nato ally. The recent US arms package included 8 P3C orions,6 C-130’s, 2000 TOW missiles,Phalanx Naval Guns,a few Javelin Missiles for testing, Plus another order for 80 Cobra attack helicopter gunships,Hellfire missiles and HawkEye awacs (which incidently were offered to it in 1986 instead of the E-3s).In additon the US is building 5 new frontline bases in Pakistan. So in light of the current american weapons sale and future ones, if the GRIPEN uses a few US made components…shouldnt really make a difference in authorizing the sale. The only other argument i can think of is that since its an offensive weapon and might be used in a conflict, the Swedes are a little hesitant because of their own export laws. Perhaps someone should remind them that being a Neutral country is all fine and dandy…….but the Cold War was over in 1989 and the USSR doesnt exist anymore .
Very nice. A wave of East European Gripens 😀 We saw the Czech’s a little while ago. Romania and Bulgaria next?
I wish Asia could get a few but too Thailand could offer nothing but frozen chicken.
Well, Pakistan was planning on buying between 60 to 100 Gripens plus 14 Saab 2000 Eireye AWACS back in july 2004. The Swedish government couldnt approve the sale because of its export restrictions…which in my opinion ridiculous because Sweden is marketing the plane in the middle east and sold Bofors to india. Pakistan only wants to replace its F-7’s and use the GRIPENS for an air defense role only. It seems the PAF is losing out since its plan to set up a VIGGEN manufacturing facility in 1971 fell through because of the 1971 war in East Pakistan. If the GRIPEN is approved for joint manufacturing in Pakistan, the order magnitude could be as high as 120 Jets. That is more planes than Sweden had hoped to export in the next 20 years.!!
Lockheed Martin to upgrade Pakistani P3C orions
(Source: US Department of Defense; issued Jan. 24, 2005)
Lockheed Martin Corp., Marietta, Ga., is being awarded an $11,087,369 ceiling-priced modification to a previously awarded cost-plus-fixed-fee contract (N00019-05-C-0005) to perform in-country standard depot level maintenance on two P-3 Update II.5 aircraft, to include repair and maintenance tasks necessary to return the aircraft to a “safe for flight condition”.
In addition, this modification provides for on-the-job training of Pakistan Navy D-level maintenance personnel for the Government of Pakistan under the Foreign Military Sales Program.
Work will be performed at the Naval Station, Mehran Karachi, Pakistan (90 percent) and Marietta, Ga. (10 percent), and is expected to be completed in April 2006. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.
