Yes, machines do have a soul and sometimes a particularly perverse mind of their own.

Must be why you always call an aeroplane ‘she’ or ‘her’!!!!:diablo:

    Cliff,

Thanks for the update and very best of luck trying to persuade the CAA to let you partake in the noble sport of aviation in this beast. I look forward with great interest to your comparisons in the future.

The 190 accompanying Walter Eichorns or EADS 109 and maybe a new build 262 would be some formation to have at Duxford in a year or two’s time!!!:diablo:

    Cheers and best of luck.

Are you sure you mean the F27?

    Moggy

Yep,Moggy, it was definitely an F27 flown by a guy called Jan Ribbentrop ( or certainly something similar anyway!)

The dispaly was always stunning and saw it on many occasions inc my homeshow at Finningley. The only thing I’ve seen since to compare were,as you say, the G222 and the Swedish 130 before being censured somewhat by the IAT safety committee!!!

Hows about Stephen Greys new toy, the TF51, which will be accompanying Glacier Girl across the pond in June?

Being offered a flight for peanuts in Stallion 51’s two seater poontang in the late 80’s by Lee lauderback when doing some flight training in FLA. We’d just pityched up at Tom Reillys facility in a put put and then my worst nightmare unfolded as the sound of a Packard Merlin approached…….
Imagine, being a teenager and being skint and then being offered a flight in a TF51 and having to say no because you couldn’t afford it. I would give my right dangly bit now for the oppurtunity.
Thanks for the offer though Lee…if it still stands for $200 I’d love to give it a go!!!;)

    Great times indeed.

Primarily my memories are of seeing the might Tomcat for the first time, the SR71 having a bit of an engine ‘burp’ and spouting about 50ft of flame out of the back of one of it’s donks!!!! and the c130 LAPES drops along with the MC130 Fulton recovery demo.

And of course the burgers……you wan SOOOORCE!? 😮

    Great topic.

    Blah,Blah,Blah…and Bullsh-te to boot!

    Come off it guys.
SRB will waste no oppurtunity to have a go at his main competitor-BA- and this is a prime example and has been doing the rounds ever since the decision was made to retire the Conc. Let us remember that BA was actually making money from Concorde and had just started a cabin refit prior to the AF accident and was not planning a retirement at all. Fingers should be pointed towards nos amis across the channel for the reasons why it was grounded.

Moving back to SRB he is a v.good PR guy and wastes no chances when deriding BA as the big bad guy in the aviation industry-jealousy perhaps?

Take the recent ‘price fixing’ allegations where BA were done up like a kipper and have all but admitted the fixing despite Virgin also being involved up to their follicles in it. But because they blow the whistle they get away scott free despite having colluded ever since the fuel surcharge came into effect!!!

My personal favourites though-‘ Four engines for longhaul’ on the side of their 340’s le BA were using a lot of triples and 76’s on the transatlantic. Guess what though? The 340-600’s fuel burns are so cr-p they decide not to get any more and buy 787’s instead……with, now let me think……one, two engines!!!!!!
Time to get the Hounslow possy with their aerosols on the case!!!

    Toodle pip!

Hi Folks and apologies for being a little cheeky in punting my post back up to the top of the list but I do have a serious question.

Further to the the above posts I had a look at the excellent website lostbombers.co.uk for a reference to RG498 Halifax III. The following was posted:-

“Serial Range RG480 – RG513. 34 Halifax Mk.V1. Part of a batch of 400 HP Halifax Mk.B.111/A.V11/B.V1. RG345-RG390; RG413-RG446 (80) B.111; RG447-RG458; RG472-RG479 (20) A/B.V11; RG480-RG513; RG527-RG568; RG583-RG625; RG639-RG679; RG639-RG736; RG749-RG790; RG813-RG853; RG867-RG879 (300) B.V1. Delivered by English Electric Co (Salmesbury & Preston) between 14Feb45 and 28Feb45. Airborne 1332 15Mar45 from Pocklington to bomb the Mathias Stinnes Benzol plant. Bombed the AP at 1618 from 19,000 feet, but sustained serious Flak damage. diverted to Manston, landing here at 1743. Its arrival was only semi-controlled due to the battle-damage which resulted in a heavy landing and soon afterwards a fire broke out. It is believed the crew escaped relatively unharmed, but the microfilm quality is so poor thet their names are quite unreadable. F/L W.L.M.Dick ”

Is there any way you know of that could verify if WLM Dick is just a misreading of WHA Dick and seeing if the award of the DFC was for bringing this stricken a/c home.

Many thanks again for any help that is forthcoming.

    Lightning

If I remember rightly, didn’t Flypast do a freebie CD recently narrated by Douglas Bader with lots of a/c recordings including a very loud Lightning flypast.:dev2: Good for cranking up and frightening the neighbours!!!

Guys, I can’t thankyou enough for taking the time and the trouble to do some digging.
Having looked at the Gazette late last night I was faced with a huge number of entries and you chaps have very kindly looked in to it for me. The two entries would seem to tie up re the Halifax, as I see from a quick look on T’internet show 102 being equipped with Halifax III’s at the time of 498’s loss ( can’t explain the different initials though.) and the award of the DFC some 6 mths later. Similarly his retirement almost coincides with the deeds dates on this property.
Time for some more digging to see what happened!!!!

    Many Thanks once again all.

As a PS This current house and area seem to be magnets and seem to attract aircrew. Not only am I a civvie pilot in a house once owned by a service crew member but 3 of my immediate neighbours are ex BOAC skippers and we’re in what used to be the grounds of a manor with strong USAAF links……the plot thickens!!!

PPS Thanks again Colin. I will do my utmost to pop along but unfortunately it won’t be on the 16th due to work but I’ll check out your meeting dates and hopefully I can thankyou in person.

Colin, you are a gentleman indeed and look forward to hearing any news. Also look forward to the beginning of May and your ‘little do’. Hope to be able to thank you in person although I think you may be a tad busy 😉 !!!

Cheers Ian st. I wasn’t aware of that website and judging by the quick look I’ve had so far it may take some time to wade through all the articles!!! 😮

    Cheers guys.

Any other help would be greatly appreciated.

Is there not the ‘get out’ that if you don’t pay for the flight directly but just pay ‘costs’ ( very much in inverted commas! ) then it’s not actually a public transport flight……..if that makes sense????
I believe that;s how certain companies work their way round it. As for the extra seat I don’t know if the SHF P51 has an extra?

Its easy. There is only one cause of the a/c coming down. Gravity overpowered the force of aerodynamics.
I’ve speculated now chuck me off!!! 😉

PS Most importantly nobody was hurt. Nuff said?

    Many Thanks MK12.

Have just had a look on Kenneth Wynn’s excllent book Men of the Battle of Britain and found a brief mention of FO Machacek.
Having joined the Czech af in Poland he then enlisted in l’armee de l’air when Poland fell and then moved once more on the falling of France to the RAF. He was then shot down twice, firstly in Hurricane V7337 after being wounded in the leg and then in R7218.
I also had a look for an entry regarding PO Reeves but unfortunately no joy.
It is interesting to note that the a/c was at Bigging for a while with 92 sqn which is certainly news to me. Can anybody shed any light on the a/c at it’s brief stay there?

    Thanks all.
