Is that possibly something more than coincidence? 🙂

RE: Two in a fighter. Did it ever happen?

I remember reading in the old RAF Flying Review, the great-grandfather of all the Key magazines (which really reveals what an old fart I am 🙂 ), an account by D. H. Clarke about doing a landing in North Africa in a Kittyhawk to pick up a squadron mate who had been taken down by ground fire while strafing an airfield.

On the Eastern front the habit of landing to pick up comrades was nearly routine amongst the Russians, but then much of the Ukraine was really just an enormous single landing field occasionally disrupted by villages. Occasionally, Yak pilots would remove a fuselage hatch cover and squeeze the rescued pilot into the fuselage open space instead of squeezing into the cabin. During the Finnish war there was an incident when the pick-up aircraft was a ski-equipped I-15bis, and the rescued pilot was flown back hanging onto one of the landing gear legs. Russian memoirs also recount a number of occasions when the “rescuing” aircraft crashed or got stuck in a rut, resulting in both crews being in the soup.

The Hurricane would seem a reasonable bet for doing such a rescue. But trying it in a Spitfire with that narrow undercarriage would seem liek a fool’s errand indeed. The Messerschmitt, with its narrow undercarriage and also its side-hinging cockpit cover would seem an even more unpromising choice, which may explain why I’ve encountered no accounts of the Germans trying it.

RE: Which WWII aviator/aviatrix interests you most?

For me as a Russianist researcher it has to be any of the truly unknown Soviet aces – not the ones little known in the West, but those who have been air-brushed out of Soviet accounts and are truly unknown. There are a number who were awarded the HSU but stripped of their medals after the war for political or presonal reasons. There were others who should have received the HSU during the war, but never did, again because of personal or political problems. Symbolizing them all might be Vladimir Bobrov, who first flew over Spain, and then throughout WWII, flying 577 sorties, and scoring 43 individual and 24 shared victories, which should have earned him two HSUs. He got none, and at the beginning of 1944 was stripped of his command of the 129 Guards regiment. No other unit would accept him, even as a line pilot. Only in May 1944 when Aleksandr Pokryshkin was given command of the 9 Guards Fighter Division was there a commander with sufficient “yaitsa” to offer Bobrov command of one of his regiments. He was known by his pilots as a good mann and commander, and obviously was a successful fighter. Bobrov died in 1971 and was awarded the HSU only on March 20, 1991, one of the very last to receive that medal. Shortly afterward, the HSU was replaced by the Hero of the Russian Federation.

    RE: Putnam Books..

For good comprehensive surveys, all those books are good.
Lennaert Andersson is particularly good. Treatment of some fo the stnadard aircraft I-16, SB-2, etc., is a bit weak, but he makes up for it by his covrage of little-known Soviet dyptes of the 1920s-30s, and particularly for his discussion of the development of both military and civil aviation between the wars.

    Saab,

You are absolutely correct. On that journey, my itinerary was MSP, JFK, Schipol, SVO. And after the fact, I just plain did not remember exactly where the first roll began. The RAM 747 was also taken there. Notice the green tail with the shamrock in the distant backgrond; then notice that same tail again, now at a distant gate behind the blurred Uzbek airliner. Unfortunately the Uzbek was quite some distance away, and what you see is the result of “zoom – crop – sharpen, fiddle – and keep fiddling” photo editing technique. But better than the traditional poke in the eye with a pointy stick or a flight on a Russian domestic carrier. 🙂

    RE: pets on board

In August 1994 I flew from Kursk to Moscow in an Aeroflot An-24. On board we had a Russian family with a huge, beautiful Great Dane. No problems. The dog was nervous but well-behaved which probably showed he understood he was flying Aeroflot 🙂 I volunteer to let somebody’s pooch or kittie sit next to me any time – and the more often the better! The pets are better behaved than almost all of the little kids, and about half of the alleged adults. Woof! Woof!

Well, you’ve got thitrteen and a half months till the next one. Start planning. I intend to be there, and Arthur certainly will not miss. What if a bunch of forum regulars were all to show up? I expect the people at the Baltika Beer concerssion would give prayers of thanks, and might be able to afford to send their kids to Farnborough and RIAT. 🙂 🙂

    RE: SIZE MATTER’S?

Thanks. And sorry for not identifying better. The little one flying the top stack position is not an An-12, rather the new An-140, ar at least that’s what they were calling it the week of MAKS-01.
