RE: your favourite cities

Certainly Sankt Peterburg has to go at the top of the list. See below.
But Moscow is also very much improved, and Volgograd is a very interesting city. Very arid, but all over the city they have a network of above ground water irrigation pipes to keep the trees and grass alive. They have some of the nicest looking women around, and the local mustard is as hot as any pepper anywhere in the world – including the Thai bird chilis or the habaneros.

RE: Anybody served in the military before ???????

For the record – Two years in the US Army. Was a Combat Engineer (sapper to the rest of the world) which was not really a very good thing for a little guy. Spent a year in Vietnam – which is how I got that neat photo of the V-100.
I was not a happy camper at the time, but in retrospect I consider it all a valuable experience.
After I got home I served another year in the US Army National Guard, or the “weakend warriors” (note: that was not a typo for “weekend warriors”), which was a totally disillusioning experience. But that’s another non-story.

Lose the “era” and you get 100%. – V-100. Chu Lai. Can’t remember more precisely than spring 1970. That unit had superheroes on all their cars. I remember also seeing Wonder Woman, Captain America, Hulk, and of course Spidey. Unfortunately this is the only picture I was able to get.

Easy. In spite of competition from Northworst, it has to be Aeroflop.
Flew aTupolev 154 fron Moscow t Volgograd. No meal service, so bring picnic bag with one of those cardboard juice boxes. Trying to use my folding knife to punch open the damn thing when the plane did a bounce worse than usual. Opened up my hand instead of the juice box. That meant a trip to Volgograd municipal hospital after arrival. 🙁 Leaving Volgograd, we took an Antonov 24 to Kursk. I liked the idea of twin props until I got off the plane at Kursk, and saw the tires were about as bald as Gorbachev.

RE: Sorry people

So what is so terribly wrong with a little bit of religious sentiment? I am a bit short of that myself, but I’m also short on the anti-religion. I notice that some others in the forums are not too discreet with their social/philosophical preferences – particularly of a “materialist” inclination? Personally, I take my outlook from the traditions of the Scottish enlightenment – Alexander Pope, Smith, Hume, etc. But so long as ye try not to force thy views on me…

Stand tall, JA. And shame on the forum members who fail to show the tolerance they think they believe in.

NO Tomel,

He’s a pure civilian with an attitude who learned everything as a hobby. Many of America’s best military analysts – David Isby, Steve Zaloga, Joe Bermudez, me ;):) are self-taught – either no military experience, or just a short bit out at the pointy-nasty end.
