I wouldn’t be surprised if in 10-15 years an “air force for hire” is available…the Tom Clancy’s Hawx will see much more “real”
I look forward to seeing the JAS 39 in Cuban markings…even if only CGI
In all seriousness, I think this is the end of small air forces. As has been said, unless you are an uninteresting nation that would never have to face US/NATO intervention and only have to fight small wars such as Uganda or Botswana then forget the idea of flying fixed wing aircraft at least.
Modern fighter aircraft are becoming increasingly more and more expensive. I even have doubts at the idea of seeing (in 40-50 years time) used F-22’s or EF2000’s flying in most Central or Southern African colours.
Kinda sounds like the deal Russia has with India, soaring prices
Interesting and I’d imagine quite worrying for the Israeli Navy. Thanks for the post
You guys realise it’s been only a couple of years since Air Forces Monthly and other combat aircraft magazines published articles on the LARAF since Libya opened its doors during LAVEX. Now, we have bombed the pants out of the LARAF and probably destroyed a good portion of their equipment. My point: No more photos of Libyan MiG’s and Mirage F1’s in future magazine articles…I cry 🙁 🙁 🙁
Ok, plot line predictions anyone?
I say:
US vs. North Korea (which has somehow become the operator of CGI Su-37’s and J-10’s)….all I can say is PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE no fake F-5’s or F-16’s even…we have the technology people!!! CGI all the way…

Spain, amongst many others, never seems to get involved!
Maybe that’s the way forward? Maybe we (or rather the leaders of the “world powers”) should just ‘live and let die’. We always seem to make the situation worse anyway in the long run.

I read earlier today I read the RAF is ready to send their Tornados and Typhoons for this operation! I gather they realize what President Obama said, that secure a no fly zone the UN forces will have to bomb Libya! The IADS will have to be suppressed, etc. The SAMs would be the greatest threat.
I typed in the search, “libya no fly zone RAF tornado.”.
I’ll probably be proven wrong in a few days if not a few hours, but I think the no fly zone will not be implemented. If Gaddafi secures Benghazi and routs the remaining rebels then there will be little point in international military action. That is unless he continues to bomb the cities and towns that were the main points of unrest post-Gaddafi victory.
In all honesty, I am starting to think maybe it would be better with Gaddafi left in charge. Remember the old saying “Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t”
Do you seriously think there will actually be opposition from the LARAF? Are you having a laugh with us or what? Nobody on this site knows what damage the LARAF has suffered during civil fighting. We already know that at least one airbase was “captured” by the rebel forces. Home to MiG-23’s I believe, so that’s one big portion of Libya’s main air defender out of the picture. Su-24 Fencer has no real business taking on another aircraft so rule that out. Su-22 is not a suitable air defence asset as was proved during the incidents in the ’80’s with the US Navy Tomcats. The MiG-25 has I believe been retired as a fighter by the LARAF…there goes another one. So you are left with a hand full of Mirage F1, MiG-23 and MiG-21’s to stand off against (potentially) a fleet of Rafales, EF2000’s and Mirage 2000’s…and that’s just France and the UK. Now add in potential “allies” or “coalition members” such as Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Oman. My advice to the LARAF…stay at home and stay safe.

Future U.S. President: We believe that Great Britain is in possesion of W.M.D.’s…we should be right this time, we sold them to ’em! We have taken steps to ensure Britain no longer can threaten the security of the rest of the free world. At 07.00hrs this morning, US marine and air units launched “Operation: Giving Freedom Regardless Of Whether Or Not You Want It” by launching the invasion of the Falklands. The presence of oil has nothing to do with it…honestly!…
