Argh the Abingdon rumour does keep re-surfacing as philo has stated but interesting to read or hear conflicting news.
When i worked at Abingdon in the last few years of RAF Ops & first 5 yars of Army reign, i do seem to recall the big “F” Hangar (you can’t miss it!) which once was used for Beverely, Belfast & latterly Jaguar major maintenance of talk that the Army wanted to build inspection pits inside but there was a claus which said ” no inspection pits were to be built inside as the hangar maybe used for future aircraft use”…
But being as my office was in “E” hangar (once used for Hawk major servicing), i clearly remember the whole hangar floor being ripped up & relaid with inspection pits in.
Its funny since the Army took over in late 92, many thought basically no more Aircraft will ever land there – but within 10 months the RAF staged Exercise Roaring Lion which saw up to 20 odd C130’s deployed to Abingdon for a few weeks.
Then Bensons 60sqn Wessex used the airfield regular for training
until 60sqn disbanded, in 94 or 95 the RAF 612VGS Motorglider school moved in with a new low hangar & offices in the SE corner flying the Grob Vigilants as they are today… & Bensons Puma force & Merlin HC3’s use it regular for training purposes so it hasn’t really been dormant.
The odd C130 have used it for Parachuting as have Skyvans, & the localised Army club will be using it in the future at times for Parachuting.
Oh nearly forgot the Armys Apache helis have started using it recently when needed!!
The Air Control Tower has sadly been vandalised & left to the elements which is a shame as up to 5 years ago it all worked fine as in Lights, Heating & Air Con!
The one thing that i personally think is needed is a localised Air Traffic Control due to the movements at times and with some kind of control back, it would keep those ****heads off the airfield who use it as a dog walking area / familys walking across active runways…. who disregard warning signs.
As someone else has told me, it will take somebody to be killed before action happens & i know of a few close shaves in the past!.
But at least it sees action regular unlike the likes of Upper Heyford!
And of course my annual Abingdon Fayre event!!!
😀 😀 😀
Mr OAG
I will consider doing a talk on my ABINGDON FAYRE Air events in general & give you an insight into the time it takes to organise & complexities of staging an air event! (8 months graft as you know already chap!)…
Secondly, i know a Lancaster Gunner locally, i see if he would be interested & will try to trace someone i knew who worked on 1AMS at RAF Abingdon on Jag servicing, then worked out on the Omani Jags & last i heard he went to work for BAE…
I would like to say here Mr OAG is a good friend of mine & i think he has done a tremendous job in forfilling a lifetime ambition of setting up the Oxfordshire Aviation Group… oxfordshires premier aviation group!!
robbelc – the last Benson families day of significance was 2002, helped to prepare for it!
Ant Harrington , check your PM’s, – interested to find out about that Spit fuselage in Wilts matey…
My e-mail address !!
Forgot my frigging e-mail!!, send details to:

Yes you could well be right about the SALT treaty – i will have to investigate!!
My view is Phantoms in preservation are slowly declining – ok XV408 is not the best kept example but with abit of TLC it could look quite good & i would apply a coat of weatherproofing paint (cannot remember the technical name!!!) to help preserve it.
Maybe if i can have a word with the Army as i have suggested, as its technically to be on MOD grounds, i am wondering if it can classed as a gate guard, i know an ideal place to put it ( near the rear guardroom overlooking the airfield……. may help to save it from the cutters torch!
The biggest headache is removing it from Fairford to Abingdon as the costs of moving it by road is big!
Then theres the Police bill as would need them involved.
A C17 from nearby Brize — Hmmmmm??
Its a nice thought isn’t it but i will have to look at it carefully – i have been reminded a good friend of mine has spoken to the Scrapman with the rights to cut it up, last week on my behalf but he has not returned the call – yet!
Here you go – whilst working at RAF Abingdon, on Red Nose day a nose cone from one of the AEW3’s was painted up as the link below shows you!!!

I think if memory serves me rightly it was 1991 and this chap was taking it around the Station.
I do somewhere have a few more pics of the Nimrod AEW3’s being scrapped at Abingdon, will have to dig them out.
Wots that then Damien, the “Burkes Air Spectacular”!
Just to add Ant, the airfield is used a bit in the week for Bensons Heli force of Pumas / Merlins as is a primary training site for them & recently Apaches too…
Odd C130 or Skyvan on Para dropping exercises for good measure, oh and Sir John Allisons Miles Gemini is also located here!
Hi, as organiser of the annual 5th ABINGDON FAYRE, my event is on 2 May, the GVFWE is 2 weeks later, 2 totally seperate events..
I am led to believe the GVFWE was booked in without consulting the resident 612 VGS that use the airfield at weekends for training – so has not gone down particulary well with them unfortunetly..
612 have to fly 45 weekends minimum for training, with the odd week long courses, so in our case as we know them very well, i let them fly on the Sat (our set up day) & Sun they provide aircraft for Static / Mobile Air Traffic tower etc for our use…
In the case of the GVFWE, its a case of moving out to another temp location (probably Benson) which is more hassle than you realise.
Still, enthusiasts cannot grumble at 2 events in 2 weeks eh!!!
Philo – good on you, Gordon Rogers is a good chap to speak to at the Abingdon Herald offices & i am sure they will do something in the local rag for you…
Keep us informed – its a pity it wasn’t May 2 2004 at my ABINGDON FAYRE event at Abingdon Airfield, as we would have done a PR bit over the PA System & try to drum up support from the locals!!
Mine was the rather splendid looking Bucc in Gulf colurs at Fairford this year – looked really smart…
If i had the money, being as i organise the “Abingdon Fayre” (mini Airshow / Country Fayre ) events at Abingdon, it would be fitting to have the last example back at Abingdon for preservation & to be on show at my event..
Oh well can only dream!!!!!
