Dad’s Army was not only one of the very best comedy programmes but also a truly great history lesson. Everyone of the cast fitted the role perfectly, and very much including Colin Bean as Private Sponge. Stand-down and Rest in Peace, Colin, and thank you for all the laughs you still give me.

Don’t think it was a book but, living not far from Stratford-on-Avon just after WW2, the sight of gliders casting off from their tow-planes certainly sparked off an interest, and from there it grew. To-day, 63 years on, still involved with aviation, including that of the 40’s. Very lucky in that aspect. 🙂

Yes, I remember this as well when part of the RAF Gliding and Soaring team taking part in the Nationals at Lasham mega moons ago. Possibly 1964 or around then. The site was on the opposite side of the road to the airfield proper and where the RAF crowd would set up camp in an assortment of tents and caravans, complete with a field kitchen. Wonder what happened to all that hardware! 🙂

Yes we have got there. Two pole rocker switch for tailplane trimming so that the early runaways would not be repeated. The elevator is linked to the stick by a rod for the entire length of the aircraft. As far as I can remember trim actuator moves the rear (spar) of the taiplane. Am I right?
As an electrician (sorry, we all have a cross to bear) I found the Canberra one of the best aircraft to work on. Everything had been thouugh out carefully and not just crammed in corners like so many other types. No wonder it is still flying.

I know a possible source but it will be Monday before I can get further info.

Yes. Very simple and effective use of an electric actuator to drive the tailplane incidence up and down.

The Canberra was a really delightful aircraft to look at, work on and fly in. Of all the aircraft that I have been associated, got to be one of the best. 🙂

Thank you REF for the photographs and the memories that come flooding back of the hours spent in those hangars carrying out Major & Minor servicings on the T11’s. Happy days. And ‘incidents’ like the practice AOC parade when we had a ‘marching competition’ to see which flight could march the best in review order. And when the CO announced that the WRAFs were the best the rest of the station, to the man, shouted out ‘You dirty old man’ and then burst into laughter. I first flew gliders at Swinderby, and my first jet flight was in the Vampire T11 at ‘Swinders’. Must scan the in-flight photograph of XE998 ’36’ that I took on 29 Nov ’61 and post it here. That aircraft is now in the Hall of Aviation, Southampton.

Marching up and down in the hangars, or even on the square………..

Get some time in lad – I remember serving at RAF Swinderby when we used the hangars for putting aircraft to bed at night, DH Vampire T11 to be exact, all 61 of them. And the square, well that was the car park, Airmen, for the use of. When? The early 60’s. That bit of info should send any DI into a terminal spin.

So the next post will claim that he was on Wellingtons at Swinderby.

By the way, the 70’s TV series ‘Get Some In’ is still available on DVD. Worth getting. Brings back many vivid memories of what it was really like in the ’50s.

    Grob Tutor incident

    Kev35.

You had little choice than to use a parachute in the Chipmunk as the seat was designed for the use of the ‘seat type’ chute and you had to sit on something, or you couldn’t see over the handlebars. My days’ gliding – seem to remember that a lot of gliders were designed for the pilot to wear a ‘back type’ parachute, but do not know about modern gliders, nor about the Tutor.

Sincere condolences to all those affected by the tragic event on Sunday.
