UP-DATE – SANDOWN – EGHN
I am reliably informed that PPR is no longer required at Sandown! :):):)
Apparently you can call SANDOWN on 119.275MHz or, if you wish, telephone 01983 405125 (SANDOWN TOWER) for airfield information.
Park on the NORTH side for the Flying School / CJ’s Cafe and all mod cons. You can also pay your landing fee here. Telephone 01983 402402
If your map and SATNAV data base are so up to date as not to show us, according to my rather old Pooley’s, the airfield co-ordinates are 50 39 06N 01 10 50W, but PLEASE CHECK THAT WE HAVE NOT MOVED 😮
So what are you waiting for? See you soon..
Hi Chox.
Are you thinking of the di-electric surfaces, things like dopplers, radars etc?
My memories of the Victors in the 60’s are of anti-flash white and the ‘faded’ roundels and markings.
The anti-flash white was definitely very white, and had to be kept clean. Wadpole cleaner would remove anything, including the skin off your hands.
Hope this helps.
……… but at SANDOWN you now have a tower 7 days a week and, on a good day, someone to marshal you in to your parking slot, greet you with a smile, answer any questions that you may have, a real live person to accept your landing fee AND a great cafe on the same side of the field as you park (no hedge hugging at Sandown!), permitting of course you get there early enough – due to space constrictions overflow parking is on the south side.
Plus, of course, good company. Now where would I prefer to land? Yep, Sandown :):):)
SANDOWN FULLY OPERATIONAL
Yes, as the revised title says, Bembridge might be closed, but SANDOWN IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS, as indeed it always has been . (Thanks Willip 26 & Moggy for making the change to the thread title).
Current situation on the Isle of Wight:
Bembridge: Closed to all except resident aircraft (approx 5) and the Vectis Gliding Club.
Sandown: Open and operational 7 days a week. Tower (119.275) is on the south side is now operated by the Britten Norman Group.
Full facilities (parking and booking-in, flying school, CJ’s excellent food restaurant, proper toilets, smiles and good company on the north side. Taxis are available. Those ‘not wishing to facilitate’ can park on the south side.
So, what are you waiting for?
See you there.
Sandown is still here!
Rumoured elsewhere that Britten Norman have taken an interest in Sandown, thus making its immediate future a little more secure.
Any comment Fieldhawk?
Moggy
Keyword: Rumour. Just wish someone would put their head above the parrapet and say something, even if it is “Get your head down”.
Fact: Sandown is still operational. Strictly PPR 01983 402 402 or 07930 242 488. Call 119.275 Sandown Traffic. Park north side outside Flying School and come in for tea, coffee and good food. And good company. Toilets available (yes, rarity on the Isle of Wight I know ).
Sorry, no aviation fuel, except Mogas, is available on the Isle of wight, so fill up before coming over.
For the record, at least 70 aircraft visited Sandown to-day, Saturday 19 March. It was a great day. Thanks to all who made the trip. Come again; soon.
Yes, we do have toilets at Sandown
PeeDee no pun intended, but do you have toilets there? 🙂 🙂
Of course we have toilets. Both Ladies and Gentleman, inside the club. Or if you are that desperate, there is an earth bank nearby. 😮
The toilets, I can assure you, are run by the club and NOT the local council who find it more important to pay a Chief Executive (what ever that is) £150K, rather than the same sum on public toilets – wait till they get old!!
Ironical the abbreviation for the council is I WC. 😀
Sandown Operational
Yes very welcoming indeed.
Have you rebuilt the cafe then? Or is it still the makeshift one round the back?
Hi PeeDee. No the ‘phoenix’ has not reached the (Aviator) cafe, in fact it has now been lowered to the foundations, and the Porta-Cabin cafe (on the south side) is closed. Instead Carla has moved to the cafe in the Specialist Flying School on the north side of the airfield, and you and all are very welcome to a nice cosy club atmosphere with excellent food, drinks and friendship. But please note that all flights have to be srtictly PPR on 01983 402 402 or 07930 242 488.
Exactly what is going to happen at Sandown in the long run is still subject to much rumour and counter-rumour, but what is certain is that the airfield is open to GA and operating right now and it is the intention of all concerned that this is the way it will remain.
See you there. To-day?? 🙂
Yes but it would still be nice to see them hanging upside down from the underside of the a/c whilst doing their nails or playing a violin.
That’s a thought for Andre Rieu’s next tour! 🙂
Visit the Isle of wight
You might not be welcome at Bembridge, but you certainly are at Sandown (EGHN). Strictly PPR on 01983 402402. Great cafe, Great company. Come on down! :):):)
Before going to Abingdon the Exhibition flight was at 71MU, RAF Bicester. I can remember going out with various exhibits (Spitfire, Javelin cockpit, Vulcan cockpit, Bloodhound and a few others) to such sites as the School Girls & Boys Exhibition (Olympia) in the early ’60’s. It was always a good number, although I seem to remember that some of the ‘digs’ you were put up in could be a bit ‘iffy’. Great days!:D
NO!
D O N O T L E T T H I S H A P P E N.
On the other hand, how about ‘Twickers’ as a heliport.
That would be fun. And watch all the woodworm come to the suface then.
If you really want somewhere to kick a bit of inflated leather around, look for one of those yellow fields in the Spring. They are not being used for anything useful.
REJOICE – SANDOWN SURVIVES ANOTHER BATTLE!!!
EGTC – Something tells me that, shortly, you will have an e-mail from the CAA again, this time telling one and all that SANDOWN WILL REMAIN ACTIVE.
Please go to http://www.flyingschool.com and, once the update is complete you will see that the airfield is TO REMAIN OPEN until at least sometime in 2011, and all things being equal, way beyond that.
There is now an excellent cafe on the north side at the Specialist Flying School (formerly in the portacabin but with much more space and without a bomb-site in front of it).
Things are looking good, very good. No more gloom, just :D:D 😀 😀 😀
The telephone number is 01983 402 402 – not any other number.
See you soon. Or make that VERY SOON.
We are still smiling….
Thanks for that EGTC – have passed that on the Ops Control. Can’t say too much as guess the enemy is on frequency.
Watch this space and I will keep you updated as and when. We are still fighting to stay alive. At the moment Sandown is still alive, whether the Campaign Against Aviation says so, or not.
Nil Desperandum Carborandum 🙂
Still operating!
Hi all.
Below is the link to the local newspaper report on the weekend of 25/26 September this year.
http://www.iwcp.co.uk/news/news/fight-to-keep-airport-open-given-boost-34957.aspx
I understand that there is to be another fly-in very shortly. It may be at fairly short notice as a better metman than was on duty last weekend is being hunted for. Bit too much crosswind.
Sandown is still there, and it is going to remain there.
Telephone number is 01983 402 402 and NOT any other number you may have
Come on down!
Just on my way to do my bit for the day – booking in clerk.
See you there.
Don’t forget. north side of the airfield – where the rest are.
Telephone number is 01983 402 402
Fieldhawk.:D
