Looks that way. Doesn’t seem too impossible to do. They put Mirage IFR probes on MiG-23BNs.

If we follow that logic, then it’ no coincidence that Buran is nearly identical to the Space Shuttle.

Pretty simple. Big aircraft w/a big radar, aircrew of two, guiding for long-range AAMs. The Soviets even mounted them in the same place. R-33/AIM-54, same size, same weight, same purpose. All coincidental?

No. The MiG-31’s engines. The F-14’s powerplants, from the outset, were a problem until much later on.

Change in leadership. Money talks. I still think the Soviets had a lot more on the F-14 than the West realized. The Soviets were/are great at spying. Within a couple of years of the revolution, the MiG-31 was VVS entering service. No way the Russians turned that kind of technology around in two years. The tech the Russians acquired from the West and inspired by the F-14 went into the MiG-31. Along with some powerful engines.

I’m sure Iran gave the Soviets a nice look, but they didn’t let them keep one. The GRU and the KGB had the goods on the F-14 before the Shah was deposed.

So the F-16A Block 15 APG-66 radar was given a ‘Basic track-while-scan’ capability. Anyone have any idea how this differed from full TWS?

Depends on the sub-type of APG-66http://www.radartutorial.eu/19.kartei/08.airborne/karte015.en.html

Russians started developing the MiG-21PFM around ’64, which included the Gsh-23 internal. Some PF/FL models could use a podded canon at the expense of the ventral center-line fuel tank. The MiG-21 cannot go far without that tank (might as well be permanently attached). The thinking of the day was that targets were being engaged farther out than what a canon could hit. Would you want to take on a B-52’s tail with a canon or a missile? A missile with a proximity fuse. The PF/PFM were never destined to carry radar-guided missiles, but the platform as a whole were never used in that capacity. The Su-11/15, Yak-25/28, Tu-28 were the interceptors that relied on those types of weapons. During the 60s, the Soviets were not exporting those. I always thought of the Su-7 as a frustrated ground attack plane because it seemed to have all of the trappings of an interceptor and very few needed by a CAS/ground attack platform. Strap some R-3’s to an Su-7 and with the canons in the wing roots you might have something.

Crusader rocks! The last gunfighter… Just watched “Thirteen Days” recently, which contains some great Crusader footage.

How much do we have to work with? If the defense budget is tight and we’re not really facing significant threats, then MiG-21s might be a sensible buy. They’re cheap, easy to maintain, versatile (for their day), and effective (ask the VPAAF). If we’re not worrying about the budget, the F-4 becomes much more attractive. The scope of defense for which our fighter core has its say at the table deciding what to buy. The Mirage III is nice to have if you don’t want to deal with the politics of buying from the USA or the USSR. Everything is French in that airframe. I think the Draken includes some American components and armament.

I would go with the Mirage III/2000. Very clean and simple. I’ve always thought the Mirage F.1 was the best overall average fighter design that wasn’t a stovepipe. Question is who borrowed who’s design France (Mirage III/V) or the U.S. (F-102/106)?

    C-17 costs much more than a B737 or B767.

    Re: F-35B missile launch,

Is that an ASRAAM (AIM-132)? Probably testing for RAF/RN.

But why (Afghan UH-60s)? Doesn’t the Mi-8/17 perform better in the conditions around Afghanistan? Could it be that this is the U.S. DoD patronizing the U.S. defense establishment for a little gravy? I’m sure the Taliban will be stoked when they get their hands on them.
