    Noise

I also imagine that the noise a hovering F-35 would put-out could alert any submarine more readily than a droning P-3 at low altitude. Sonar would be difficult to interpret with that type of noise about.

apparently they didn”t order any missiles. find me a picture of an TNI-AU flanker with a missile. only dumb bombs and rockets you’ll see.

I can’t find a photo with pylons, let alone missiles. weird…

Hornets won because Indonesia doesn’t believe in equipping their Flankers with weapons.

Doesn’t seem to make much sense. Why buy such things in that case?

I’ll bet the RAAF pilots are more proficient on their hornets than the TNI-AU pilots on their flankers. The RAAF has operated their hornets for thirty years.

    A2A Engagement

I would love to hear the outcome of an A2A engagement between the 27’s and the hornets.

    F-35B

I have no doubt the F-35 has some long legs, but I do not think they can match that of a P-3, for example. What about the pilot? Can we keep him in a cockpit for a ten hour patrol? UAV/UCAVs (Global Hawk, Predator) will eventually fulfill the ASW/Maritime patrol roles in the future. An F-35 could be dispatched, when needed, to handle targets, but that is a way-off scenario.

    Legs

I don’t think the F-35 has the endurance or the range for ASW duty.

In the end politics are at the bottom of why some of the obvious decisions in acquisitions are not made in the US Military. The P-8 has the potential to develop into a multimission platform. The Boeing 767 or even 777 platform has the development capability, at a low cost (with existing airframes), to become the next tanker, AWACS and TACAMO platform. If I can see this the decision makers certainly can. Not saying my suggestion is the answer, the 767 is working for Italy and Japan.

    Different platforms

can you jump from a Gripen to a Rafale to a Typhoon to a Su-35 to a MiG-29 and just plug in your g-suit?

One would expect that type of apparatus to be universal within the USAF.

For our US friends here I can say, yes, the F-22 is most likely better than Tyffie. In some areas probably visibly better.. Hell, for that insane program cost it better be… 🙂

    The F-22 is quite a looker too…

    JL-9 Photos

Nice new hi-res photo of the JL-9. The MiG-21 heritage is quite apparent. Love the DSI intakes!

    Umh.. its not that simple.
In Cope India when USAF was with out AWACS support, which meant they was without the level of SA they are normaly used to.. they took a beating.

Put any US pilot in any fighter without SA in a DACT, the outcome could go quite Randomly..

First to see the other has a better, if not the best, chance of winning. AWACS or none. The “seeing” can be electronic or visual, doesn’t matter. I still would give better odds to an F-22, without AWACS support, than to an Su-30 in the same boat. If the F-22 is smart, he/she will not enter a turning dogfight and get their opponent within 15 miles. A very possible outcome for the F-22.

    F-22

My $$$ is still on the F-22. I still believe it matters whom is in the cockpit and the first to see the other.

They take one wing off of it, or is the wing out-of-frame?

    Makes Sense

Which is why I wonder if this is an interim solution to test rota-dome, electronics, engines and tail in a spacious analogue. A future aircraft would probably have the narrow style fuselage like the Hawkeye and folding wings. Operating from a land base it can also test datalinks with aircraft and surface types like the Varyag. Considering the rumoured catapult equipped carrier is a way off it isn’t particularly needed for actual operations as of yet. It should also be noted that they have purchased a number of AEW type Kamov from Russia and have their own Z-8 AEW to act as an interim solution.

That would make the most sense. The APS-120 system has been installed in the C-130 and P-3, over here, presumably for similar purposes. Still, I would love to see the JZY-01 operate from a carrier.

If the Chinese produce this design and place it into service, it will be the largest aircraft ever designed for carrier use. Going from Y-7 specs, it would be nearly 20′ longer than the E-2, close to 17′ longer wings, and taller. The base Y-7 is 10′ taller than the E-2. The photo would have me guesstimate the tail is at least 15′ tall. That is, guess the folks in the photo are around 5’7″ tall.
